The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan

1st Luminous Mystery of the Rosary

Scriptural Rosary

John the Baptist appeared; he preached in the wilderness of Judea and this was his message: 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.' This was the man the prophet Isaiah spoke of when he said:

A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.

This man John wore a garment made of camel-hair with a leather belt round his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and the whole Jordan district made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins.

Then Jesus appeared: he came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. John tried to dissuade him. "It is I who need baptism from you" he said "and yet you come to me!" But Jesus replied, "Leave it like this for the time being; it is fitting that we should, in this way, do all that righteousness demands." At this, John gave in to him.

As soon as Jesus was baptised he came up from the water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. And a voice spoke from heaven, "This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him." (Mt 3, 1-6.13-17)

Meditation: Jesus, through your humility in being baptised by John, the glory of the Holy Trinity was revealed. I am not fit to undo the strap of your sandals and yet you give yourself to me fully in the holy sacraments of your Church.

O Holy Trinity, Eternal Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I thank you for the cleansing water of baptism that has allowed me to belong to you fully. Father, I am your child. Jesus, you are my Saviour and my brother. Holy Spirit, you are my guide and you are my love.
Mary, my mother, you have given us the body of your son and, through my baptism, I have become a part of that body. Thank you for praying for me now and at the hour of my death.

Our Father ... Hail Mary (x10) ... Glory be ... O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell and lead all souls to heaven especially those who have most need of thy mercy.

Christ's Baptism in the Jordan - As we contemplate this mystery, let us pray that we may be given the grace to reach out in prayer and in action to all those in our parish and in our lives who Our Lord is calling to baptism. We present now to you one person we know and ask that they may be given the gift of faith.

The Spirit descended like a dove on them and a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved and with you I am well pleased."

3 2us by Father Augustine Conner CFR

"In Jesus Christ, true man and true God, we discover who we are and why we exist. We discover that we were made through him and for him. We discover that we are made in his image and likeness. That we are his brothers and sisters and beloved sons and daughters of the Father filled with his Holy Spirit and destined to share his glorious resurrection. We discover that each of us is eternally loved and chosen and shares in the very dignity of God."

Sunday Evangelium

with Father Marcus Holden

"John's baptism was a baptism of repentance, of preparation. Jesus's baptism is one of power and spiritual effect. Jesus went to John to be baptised not because He in any way needed baptism; the sinless Son of God needed no forgiveness of sins nor new life. He goes to John to reveal Himself to the world and to John, and to show that he has fully entered into our world, he shows us also how we must follow."

with Father Andrew Pinsent

"So it is Jesus who has made Baptism effective and life-giving for us, and by submitting to Baptism, He leads the way for us to follows. He teaches us the humility to make use of the Sacraments in the way they have been given to us. He teaches us that Baptism washes away sin, opens heaven and enables us to know and to love the Most Holy Trinity."
