Man has need of reconciliation

Catechesis by Pope St John Paul II
in his series in the Jubilee of the Redemption
General Audience, Wednesday 13 April 1983 - also in Italian, Portuguese & Spanish

"1. "God has reconciled us to himself through Christ" (2 Cor 5, 18).

Dearest brothers and sisters, man has need of reconciliation! With sin he broke his friendship with God, and found himself alone and desperate, because his destiny cannot be fulfilled outside of this friendship. He therefore aspires to reconciliation, even though he is unable to achieve it by himself. In fact, with his own strength he cannot purify his heart, free himself from the weight of sin, open himself to the life-giving warmth of God's love.

The "good news" that faith brings us is precisely this: God, in his goodness, has come to meet man. He has worked, once and for all, the reconciliation of humanity with himself, forgiving sins and creating in Christ a new, pure and holy man. St Paul underlines the sovereignty of this divine action when, speaking of the new creation, he declares: "Everything comes from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ" (2 Cor 5, 18). And he adds; "Indeed, it was God who reconciled the world to himself in Christ, not attributing their sins to men" (2 Cor 5, 19). Therefore the Apostle, in the awareness of having the ministry of reconciliation from God, concludes with the passionate exhortation: "Be reconciled with God" (2 Cor 5, 20)!

Only God is the Saviour: the conviction that man cannot be saved through his human efforts and that all salvation comes from God was instilled by the revelation of the Old Testament. Yahweh spoke to his people; "Apart from me there is no other God, just God and Saviour" (Is 45, 21). With this affirmation, however, God also assured that he would not abandon man to his own destiny. And in fact, He who had defined himself as God the Saviour, manifested, with the coming of Christ on earth, that he really was him.

2. Indeed, the fulfillment has surpassed the promise: in Christ, in fact, the mystery of salvation is revealed as the mystery of God the Father who offers his Son as a sacrifice for the redemption of humanity. While the Jewish people were waiting for a human Messiah, the Son of God himself came among men and, in his capacity as true God and true man, played the role of Saviour. It is he who, with his sacrifice, brought about the reconciliation of men with God. We cannot but admire this marvelous invention of the divine plan of salvation: the incarnate Son acted among us, in his life, in his death and in his resurrection , as God the Saviour.

Being the Son, he perfectly accomplished the work that had been entrusted to him by the Father. He considers this work both that of the Father and his own. It is first of all the work of the Father, because he had the initiative and it is he who continues to guide it. The Father has handed over this work into the hands of his Son, but he remains the One who dominates it and who leads it to completion. Jesus recognizes in the Father the one who traced the way of sacrifice as way of salvation. He does not want to deny the responsibility of men in his death sentence. But, in the drama that is being prepared, he discerns the sovereign action of the Father who, while respecting human freedom, guides events according to a superior plan. At Gethsemane it is the will of the Father that he accepts, and at the moment of his arrest, orders Peter to put the sword back in its sheath, he indicates the reason for his docility: "Should I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?" (Jn 18, 11).

Any explanation of the event of Calvary by simply historical causes would be insufficient. The redemptive sacrifice is not due to those who condemned Jesus, but to the Father, who made the decision to procure salvation for humanity through this way.

3. This mystery always surprises us, because men who hear the good news cannot refrain from asking the question: why did the Father choose sacrifice as a means of liberation for humanity? Does he not assume a cruel face by sending the Son to sacrifice? Isn't this the manifestation of excessive rigour?

The response of revelation is precise: far from being an act of cruelty or rigorous severity, the gesture of the Father, who offers the Son in sacrifice, is the summit of love: "God so loved the world that he gave his Only Begotten Son, so that whoever believes in him may not die, but have eternal life.” St John, who reports these words in the Gospel (Jn 3, 16), comments on them in his first Letter (4, 10): "In this lies love: it was not we who loved God, but he who loved us and he sent his Son as a victim of expiation for our sins ” (1 Jn 4:10).

The Father wanted a sacrifice of reparation for the sins of humanity, but he himself paid the price for this sacrifice (cf St. Thomas, Summa theologiae, III, q48, a5, ac. Et ad 2 ), giving his Son. With this gift he showed to what measure he was Saviour and to what extent he loved mankind. His gesture is the definitive gesture of love. For this reason the paschal mystery is "the summit of the revelation and implementation of the mercy" of God (Dives in Misericordia, 7).

We must never forget that our reconciliation has cost the Father such a high price. And how can we not thank him for this love that he has brought us, with salvation, peace and joy?"

Saluti

I am very happy to welcome the groups of visitors from the English-speaking world. The word of God calls us to be reconciled to God in Christ. As the supreme act of love, God sent his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to suffer and die for our sins. In the joy of this Easter season, let us thank God for the marvellous gift of his Son and let us respond wholeheartedly to the saving action of Christ’s grace in our lives.

My welcome goes to all of you from England, Wales, Scotland and the United States. I greet all men and women religious present at this audience and especially the international renewal group of Capuchin Friars. I extend a special greeting to the Holy Year Pilgrimage of the Byzantine Ruthenian Province of the United States. I hope that your days in Rome have brought all of you closer to Christ through prayer and penance. May you now be eager to spread the Redeemer’s message, of joy and hope wherever you go.

I am also happy to address a word of welcome to the group of young men and women who are members of “Up with People”. I thank you for sharing your time and talents so that others may experience the joy of fellowship in the human family.

And upon all the English-speaking pilgrims from round the world who have come here to celebrate this Holy Year of the Redemption I invoke the blessings of the Risen Saviour.

Dziś proszę Cię, abyś przyjęła hekatombę ofiar tych naszych braci i sióstr, którzy należąc do narodu żydowskiego, dzielili z nami doświadczenia straszliwej okupacji hitlerowskiej - i ponieśli okrutną śmierć z rąk okupanta w stolicy Polki.
