"Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today in Italy and in other countries we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven which occurred on the 40th day after Easter. Likewise, on this Sunday we are also celebrating the World Day of Social Communications on the theme: "The Priest and Pastoral Ministry in a Digital World: New Media at the Service of the Word". In the Liturgy it narrates of the episode of the final departure of Jesus from his disciples (cf Lk 24: 50-51; Acts 1: 2, 9); but it is not an abandonment, because He remains always with them - with us - but under a new form. St Bernard of Clairvaux explains that Jesus' Ascension into Heaven is accomplished in three steps: "The first is the glory of the Resurrection; the second is the power to judge; and the third is sitting at the right hand of the Father" (Sermo de Ascensione Domini 60, 2: Sancti Bernardi Opera, t. vi 1, 291, 20-21). Such an event is preceded by the blessing of the disciples, whom he prepares to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, in order that salvation is proclaimed everywhere. Jesus Himself says to them: "You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you" (cf Lk 24: 47, 49).
The Lord draws the gaze of the Apostles - our gaze - toward Heaven to show how to travel the road of good during earthly life. Nevertheless, He remains within the framework of human history, He is near to each of us and guides our Christian journey: He is the companion of the those persecuted for the faith, He is in the heart of those who are marginalized, He is present in those whom the right to life is denied. We can hear, see and touch our Lord Jesus in the Church, especially through the word and the sacraments. In this regard, I call on children and young people who during this Easter Season are receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, to remain faithful to the Word of God and to the doctrine learnt, and also to assiduously approach Confession and the Eucharist, conscious of having been chosen and constituted to witness to the Truth. I renew my particular invitation to my Brothers in the Episcopate, that "in their life and actions they distinguish themselves by a powerful evangelical witness" (Letter proclaiming the Year for Priests) and know also how to use the means of communication wisely to make known the life of the Church and help the men of today to discover the Face of Christ (cf Message for the 44th World Day of Social Communications).
Dear Brothers and Sisters, the Lord opening the way to Heaven, gives us a foretaste of divine life already on this earth. A 19th-century Russian author wrote in his spiritual testament: "Observe the stars more often. When you have a burden in your soul, look at the stars or the azure of the sky. When you feel sad, when they offend you... converse... with Heaven. Then your soul will find rest" (N. Valentini L. Zák [editor], Pavel A. Florenskij. "Non dimenticatemi. I thank the Virgin Mary, whom I was able to venerate at the Shrine in Fatima in these past days, for her maternal protection during the intense pilgrimage to Portugal. To her, who watches over the witnesses of her beloved Son, let us address our prayer trustingly."

"Cari fratelli e sorelle! quest’oggi il mio primo saluto va ai fedeli laici venuti da tutta Italia - la vediamo presente tutta l'Italia - e al Cardinale Angelo Bagnasco che li accompagna come Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale. Vi ringrazio di cuore, cari fratelli e sorelle, per la vostra calorosa e nutrita presenza! Grazie! Raccogliendo l’invito della Consulta Nazionale delle Aggregazioni Laicali, avete aderito con entusiasmo a questa bella e spontanea manifestazione di fede e di solidarietà, a cui partecipa pure un consistente gruppo di parlamentari e amministratori locali. A tutti vorrei esprimere la mia viva riconoscenza. Saluto anche le migliaia di immigrati, collegati con noi da Piazza San Giovanni, con il Cardinale Vicario Agostino Vallini, in occasione della “Festa dei Popoli”. Cari amici, voi oggi mostrate il grande affetto e la profonda vicinanza della Chiesa e del popolo italiano al Papa e ai vostri sacerdoti, che quotidianamente si prendono cura di voi, perché, nell’impegno di rinnovamento spirituale e morale possiamo sempre meglio servire la Chiesa, il Popolo di Dio e quanti si rivolgono a noi con fiducia. Il vero nemico da temere e da combattere è il peccato, il male spirituale, che a volte, purtroppo, contagia anche i membri della Chiesa. Viviamo nel mondo, ma non siamo del mondo (cfr Gv 17, 14). Noi cristiani non abbiamo paura del mondo, anche se dobbiamo guardarci dalle sue seduzioni. Dobbiamo invece temere il peccato e per questo essere fortemente radicati in Dio, solidali nel bene, nell’amore, nel servizio. E’ quello che la Chiesa, i suoi ministri, unitamente ai fedeli, hanno fatto e continuano a fare con fervido impegno per il bene spirituale e materiale delle persone in ogni parte del mondo. E’ quello che specialmente voi cercate di fare abitualmente nelle parrocchie, nelle associazioni e nei movimenti: servire Dio e l’uomo nel nome di Cristo. Proseguiamo insieme con fiducia questo cammino, e le prove, che il Signore permette, ci spingano a maggiore radicalità e coerenza. E’ bello vedere oggi questa moltitudine in Piazza San Pietro come è stato emozionante per me vedere a Fatima l’immensa moltitudine, che, alla scuola di Maria, ha pregato per la conversione dei cuori. Rinnovo oggi questo appello, confortato dalla vostra presenza così numerosa! Grazie! Ancora una volta, grazie a voi tutti!

Au retour de mon pèlerinage à Fatima, je vous invite tous, plus particulièrement les prêtres, à mettre votre confiance dans l’intercession de la Vierge Marie. Puissiez-vous vous conformer toujours à la volonté de Dieu qu’elle nous indique: «Faites tout ce qu’il vous dira»! Merci pour votre prière et pour votre solidarité! Bon pèlerinage à Rome et bonne préparation à la Pentecôte!
I greet with joy the English-speaking visitors who have come here today, and I pray that your pilgrimage to Rome will strengthen your faith and your love for the Risen Lord. In the course of this week we will pray with the whole Church for the coming of the Holy Spirit, asking him to pour out his gifts upon our families, our parishes, and all whom we love. Von Herzen begrüße ich die deutschsprachigen Pilger und Besucher. Das gemeinsame Gebet mit so vielen Gläubigen hier auf dem Petersplatz ist ein sichtbarer Ausdruck unserer Einheit in der Kirche, die Jesus Christus gestiftet hat. Wie Maria und die Apostel im Abendmahlssaal bitten wir in diesen Tagen vor Pfingsten um den Heiligen Geist, den Beistand, den der Herr seinen Jüngern verheißen hat. Er schenke uns neu die Fülle seiner Gaben, damit wir das Geheimnis der Liebe des Vaters und des Sohnes immer tiefer erkennen und fähig werden, am Werk der Erlösung mitzuarbeiten. Euch allen wünsche ich einen gesegneten Sonntag.

Se celebra este domingo en muchos lugares la fiesta de la Ascensión del Señor. Jesús resucitado vuelve al Padre, abriéndonos el camino a la vida eterna y haciendo posible el don del Espíritu Santo. Como los apóstoles después de la Ascensión, también nosotros nos recogemos en oración y, en unión espiritual con la Virgen María, invocamos la efusión del Espíritu. Que su intercesión obtenga para toda la Iglesia un renovado Pentecostés. Muchas gracias y feliz domingo.
Serdeczne pozdrowienie kieruję do Polaków. Zanim Pan Jezus wstąpił do nieba, powiedział do Apostołów: „Duch Święty zstąpi na was, otrzymacie Jego moc i będziecie moimi świadkami (...) aż po krańce ziemi” (Dz 1, 8). Jest to obietnica i wezwanie, które Chrystus kieruje również do nas. Otwórzmy serca na moc Ducha i z odwagą dajmy na co dzień świadectwo wiary. Niech wam Bóg błogosławi.
