Mary shows the nobility of virginity

"1. The rapport with Mary most holy, which for every believer stems from his union with Christ, is even more pronounced in the life of consecrated persons. It is an essential aspect of their spirituality, more directly expressed in the very titles of some institutes which take the name of Mary and call themselves her "sons" or "daughters," "servants," "handmaids" or "apostles," etc. Many of them acknowledge and proclaim their link with Mary as specifically rooted in their tradition of doctrine and devotion from their foundation. They are all convinced that Mary's presence is of fundamental importance both for the spiritual life of each consecrated person, and for the solidity, unity and progress of the whole community.
2. There are sound reasons for this in Sacred Scripture itself. In the annunciation, Mary is described by the angel Gabriel as gratia plena ( kécharitôménê --Lk 1:28), in an explicit reference to the sovereign and gratuitous action of grace (cf. Redemptoris Mater 7). Mary was chosen by virtue of a unique divine love. If she belongs totally to God and lives for him, it is because she first "had found favor" with God, who wished to make her the privileged place of his relationship with humanity in the Incarnation. Mary thus reminds consecrated persons that the grace of a vocation is an unmerited favor. God has loved them first (cf. 1 Jn 4:10, 19), by virtue of a gratuitous love which should move them to give thanks.
Mary is also the model of the acceptance of grace by the human creature. In her, grace itself brought about the "yes" of her will, her free adherence, the conscious docility of her fiat, which led her to a holiness that continued to develop throughout her life. Mary never hindered this development. She always followed the inspirations of grace and made God's intentions her own; she always cooperated with God. By her example, she teaches consecrated persons not to waste the graces they have received, to make an ever more generous response to the divine gift, to let themselves be inspired, moved and guided by the Holy Spirit.
3. Mary is the one "who believed," as her cousin Elizabeth recognized. This faith enabled her to collaborate in the fulfillment of the divine plan, which to human eyes appeared impossible (cf. Lk 1:37). This is how the mystery of the Lord's coming into this world was fulfilled. The Blessed Virgin's great merit is to have cooperated with his coming. She herself, like other human beings, did not know how it could come about. She believed, and "the Word became flesh" (Jn 1:14) by the power of the Holy Spirit (cf. RMt 12-14).
Those who answer the call to the consecrated life also need great faith. To be committed to the way of the evangelical counsels, they must believe in the God who calls them to live the counsels, and in the higher destiny he offers. In order to give oneself to Christ without reserve, one must recognize that he is the absolute Lord and Master, who can ask for everything because he can do everything to bring about what he asks.

4. Mary is the Virgin of virgins (Virgo virginum). Since the earliest centuries of the Church she has been recognized as a model of consecrated virginity.
Mary's will to preserve her virginity is surprising in a context where this ideal was not widespread. Her decision was the fruit of a special grace of the Holy Spirit, who opened her heart to the desire to offer herself totally to God, body and soul. This brought about in the loftiest and humanly inconceivable way Israel's vocation to a spousal relationship with God, to belonging totally and exclusively to him as the People of God.
The Holy Spirit prepared her for her extraordinary motherhood by means of virginity, because, according to God's eternal plan, a virginal soul was to welcome the Son of God in his Incarnation. Mary's example makes it possible to understand the beauty of virginity and encourages those called to the consecrated life to take this path. It is the time to reassess virginity in the light of Mary. It is the time to propose it once again to boys and girls as a serious plan of life. With her help, Mary sustains those who have undertaken this commitment, shows them the nobility of the total gift of the heart to God and constantly strengthens their fidelity even in difficult or dangerous moments.
5. Mary was entirely dedicated to the service of her Son for years and years. She helped him grow up and prepare himself for his mission at home and in the carpenter's workshop in Nazareth (cf. RMt 17). At Cana, she asked him to reveal his power as Savior and obtained his first miracle for a couple in difficulty (cf. RMt 18, 23). She has shown us the way of perfect docility to Christ, saying: "Do whatever he tells you" (Jn 2:5). On Calvary she was close to Jesus as his mother. In the upper room, she prayed with Jesus' disciples as they waited for the Holy Spirit he had promised.
Thus she shows consecrated persons the way of dedication to Christ in the Church as a family of faith, hope, and love. She obtains for them the wonders of the manifestation of the sovereign power of her Son, our Lord and Savior.
6. The new motherhood conferred to Mary on Calvary is a gift which enriches all Christians, but its value is accentuated even more for consecrated persons. John, the beloved disciple, had offered his whole heart and all his strength to Christ. Hearing the words: "Woman, behold your son" (Jn 19:26), Mary accepted John as her son. She had understood too, that this new motherhood was open to all Christ's disciples. Her communion of ideals with John and with all consecrated people enables her motherhood to expand to the full.
Mary acts as a mother who is very attentive to helping those who have offered Christ all their love. She is full of concern for their spiritual needs. She also helps communities, as the history of religious institutes often attests. She who was present in the early community (Acts 1:14) is pleased to remain in the heart of all communities gathered in the name of her Son. In particular, she watches over the preservation and growth of their love.
The words of Jesus to the beloved disciple: "Behold your mother" (Jn 19:27), assume a particular depth in the life of consecrated persons. They are invited to consider Mary as their mother and to love her as Christ loved her. More especially, they are called to take her into their home, as John "took her into his home" (literally "among his possessions"--Jn 19:27). Above all, they must make room for her in their hearts and in their life. They must seek an ever greater development of their relationship with Mary, model and Mother of the Church, model and Mother of communities, model and Mother of all whom Christ calls to follow him.
Dearly beloved, how beautiful, venerable and in some ways enviable is this privileged position of consecrated persons beneath Mary's mantle and in Mary's heart! We pray that she may be close to them always and shine ever more as the star of their lives!"

Witam serdecznie wszystkich pielgrzymów z Polski, księży Biskupów obecnych na tej audiencji i kilkanaście tysięcy słuchaczy Radia Maryja. Oprócz tej wielkiej grupy słuchaczy Radia Maryja witam także inne grupy, nie tak liczne, niemniej zasługujące na wymienienie, a więc z diecezji rzeszowskiej – strażaków, ze Zwróconej koło Ząbkowic Śląskich – parafian Świętych Apostołów Piotra iPawła, z Leszna – parafian św. Jana Chrzciciela, ze Zgorzelca – grupę młodzieży szkolnej, również grupę Polaków z Neapolu, kilka grup turystycznych – z Opola, Słupska, Krakowa i Bielska–Białej oraz innych uczestników audiencji pochodzących bądź z kraju, bądź z emigracji.
Dzisiejsza katecheza była jakby przygotowana na to spotkanie z wielką rodziną Radia Maryja. Była to bowiem katecheza o duchowości maryjnej w życiu rodzin zakonnych, ale także w życiu nas wszystkich. W życiu całego Kościoła, tylu narodów chrześcijańskich na całym świecie, w szczególności naszego polskiego narodu. Myślę, że Radio Maryja i rodzina tego Radia jest szczególnym jak gdyby wyrazicielem, wcieleniem tej maryjnej duchowości polskiej. Dlatego was serdecznie witam.
Przybyliście dzisiaj tutaj w bardzo wielkiej grupie, ażeby nawiedzić Groby Świętych Apostołów i spotkać się z Papieżem. Towarzyszą wam, z ramienia Konferencji Episkopatu, Biskup Toruński i Sekretarz Episkopatu, a także Biskup Sandomierza. Wszystkich serdecznie witam. Obecność Księży Biskupów nadaje waszej pielgrzymce szczególny wyraz kościelny. Pozdrawiam także Ojca Dyrektora oraz jego współpracowników: wszystkich jego współpracowników duchownych i świeckich. Dziękuję wam za to spotkanie, przede wszystkim dziękuję wam za modlitwy, za nieustanny różaniec odmawiany w intencji Papieża. Bóg zapłać! To podziękowanie moje zanieście do waszych rodzin i do całej tej wielkiej rodziny Radia Maryja – wszystkich, którzy pozostali w Kraju.
Wasze radio – Radio Maryja – istnieje już trzy lata i widać, jak stopniowo dojrzewa do zadań, które postawili sobie na początku jego organizatorzy. Cieszy mnie to, że posiada ono tak wielu słuchaczy w Polsce, a także poza jej granicami. Z uznaniem wypada podkreślić bezinteresowną współpracę wielu osóbświeckich i duchownych, zaangażowanych na terenie całej Polski. Właśnie te tak zwane Biura Radia Maryja zorganizowały obecną pielgrzymkę i to spotkanie.
Moi drodzy, zadaniem Radia Maryja jest ewangelizacja, to znaczy rozprzestrzenianie Bożego Orędzia Zbawienia, głoszenie Dobrej Nowiny i dzielenie się nią z każdym człowiekiem dobrej woli. Napisałem w adhortacji “Christifideles Laici”: “U progu trzeciego millennium cały Kościół – Pasterze i wierni – musi bardziej uświadomić sobie własna odpowiedzialność wobec nakazu Chrystusa: "Idźcie na cały świat i głoście Ewangelię wszelkiemu stworzeniu". Kościołowi zostało powierzone wielkie, wymagające zaangażowania, wspaniałe zadanie ewangelizacji, ewangelizacji nowej, zwłaszcza w tym momencie dziejowym, u progu trzeciego millennium – ewangelizacji, której świat tak bardzo potrzebuje. Świeccy katolicy muszą się czuć uczestnikami aktywnymi tego dzieła, będac wezwani do głoszenia Ewangelii i życia według niej w służbie wartości oraz potrzebosób i społeczeństw”. Jest to zadanie wyjatkowe, które winno być realizowane z dużą odpowiedzialnością, w jedności z Kościołem i jego Pasterzami dla dobra całej wspólnoty.
Ewangelizacja nabiera pełnego kształtu, gdy staje się świadectwem. Trzeba dawać świadectwo prawdom i wartościom, które wyznajemy jako chrześcijanie – w rodzinie, w miejscu pracy, w szkole, w domu. Taka ewangelizacja, to znaczy głoszenie Chrystusowego orędzia zarówno świadectwem życia, jak i słowem, taka ewangelizacja nabiera swoistego charakteru i szczególnej skuteczności. Powinniśmy być jak miasto na górze, jak widoczna dla wszystkich lampa na świeczniku, aby nasze światło świeciło przed ludźmi podobnie jak latarnia morska, która wskazuje drogę do bezpiecznego portu.
Moje życzenia dla was tu obecnych i dla wszystkich słuchaczy Radia Maryja pragnę zamknąć w tych słowach św. Pawła, abyśmy “czyniac prawdę w miłości, wzrastali we wszystko w Nim, w Tym, który jest Głową naszą, w Chrystusie”.
Matce Najświętszej zawierzam dalszą działalność i apostolstwo Radia Maryja. Niech rozwija się ono i przyczynia do utrwalania tu na ziemi cywilizacji prawdy i miłości, zgodnie z wolą Boga i dla Jego chwały.
Dziękując wam serdecznie za te wspaniałe odwiedziny, pragnę równocześnie złożyć życzenia Wielkanocne dla was tu obecnych, dla waszych rodzin, dla całej wielkiej rodziny Radia Maryja, dla samego Radia Maryja, jego organizatorów, jego słuchaczy, wreszcie dla całej mojej Ojczyzny.

Saluto cordialmente tutti i pellegrini venuti dalla Polonia, i Vescovi presenti a quest’udienza e gli oltre diecimila ascoltatori di Radio Maria. Oltre a questo grande gruppo di ascoltatori di Radio Maria, saluto anche altri gruppi, che pur non essendo così numerosi, meritano lo stesso di essere nominati e sono: i pompieri della diocesi di Rzeszów, il gruppo della parrocchia dei SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo di Zwrócona, vicino Zabkowice Slaskie, il gruppo della parrocchia di S. Giovanni Battista di Leszno, il gruppo di studenti di Zgorzelec, il gruppo di polacchi di Napoli, alcuni gruppi di turisti – di Opole, SLupsk, Kraków, Bielsko-BiaLa – e tutte le altre persone che partecipano all’udienza, provenienti dalla Polonia o dall’estero.
La catechesi odierna sembrava preparata proprio per quest’incontro con la grande famiglia degli ascoltatori di Radio Maria. Era infatti una catechesi sulla spiritualità mariana nella vita delle famiglie religiose ed anche nella vita di tutti noi, nella vita di tutta la Chiesa, di tante nazioni cristiane del mondo intero, ed in particolare della nostra nazione polacca. Penso che Radio Maria e tutta la famiglia dei suoi collaboratori siano una speciale espressione, un’incarnazione di questa spiritualità mariana polacca. Perciò vi saluto di cuore.
Siete venuti oggi qui molto numerosi per visitare le Tombe degli Apostoli ed incontrare il Papa. Come rappresentanti della Conferenza Episcopale vi accompagnano il Vescovo di Torun, il Segretario dell’Episcopato e il Vescovo di Sandomierz. Li saluto tutti cordialmente. La presenza dei Vescovi conferisce al vostro pellegrinaggio un significativo aspetto ecclesiale. Saluto anche il reverendo Direttore e i suoi collaboratori, tutti i suoi collaboratori religiosi e laici. Vi ringrazio per questo incontro, e soprattutto per le preghiere, per il rosario che recitate incessantemente per il Papa. Dio vi ricompensi! Portate questo mio ringraziamento alle vostre famiglie, a tutta la grande famiglia di Radio Maria e a tutti coloro che sono rimasti in Patria.
La vostra radio – Radio Maria – esiste già da tre anni e come si può vedere sta maturando progressivamente per realizzare gli obiettivi stabiliti all’inizio dai suoi organizzatori. Sono contento che essa abbia tanti ascoltatori in Polonia ed anche all’estero. Bisogna riconoscere anche il valore del lavoro disinteressato di molte persone impegnate, religiose e laiche, in tutta la Polonia. Sono stati proprio i cosiddetti “Uffici di Radio Maria” a organizzare questo pellegrinaggio e questo incontro.
Miei cari, il compito di Radio Maria consiste nell’evangelizzazione, cioè nella diffusione del messaggio divino della salvezza, nell’annuncio della “buona novella” e nella sua condivisione con ogni persona di buona volontà. Ho scritto nell’esortazione Christifideles Laici: “Alle soglie del terzo millennio la Chiesa tutta, pastori e fedeli, deve sentire più forte la sua responsabilità di obbedire al comandamento di Cristo: “Andate in tutto il mondo e predicate il Vangelo ad ogni creatura” (Mc 16, 15) [...]. Una grande, impegnativa e magnifica impresa è stata affidata alla Chiesa: quella di una nuova evangelizzazione, di cui il mondo attuale – specialmente in questo momento storico, alle soglie del Terzo Millennio – ha immenso bisogno. I fedeli laici devono sentirsi parte viva e responsabile di quest’impresa, chiamati come sono ad annunciare e a vivere il Vangelo nel servizio ai valori e alle esigenze della persona e della società” (cf. Christifideles Laici, 64). Si tratta di un compito eccezionale, che va realizzato con grande responsabilità, nell’unione con la Chiesa e con i suoi Pastori per il bene di tutta la comunità.
L’evangelizzazione raggiunge la sua pienezza quando diventa testimonianza. Bisogna testimoniare le verità e i valori in cui crediamo come cristiani in famiglia, nei luoghi di lavoro, a scuola e a casa. Tale evangelizzazione, vale a dire l’annuncio del messaggio di Cristo sia con la testimonianza della vita, sia con la parola, acquista un carattere particolare ed un’efficacia unica. Dovremmo essere come la città collocata sopra un monte, come una lucerna sopra il lucerniere, affinché la nostra luce risplenda come un faro che indica la via verso un porto sicuro (cf. Mt 5, 14-15).
I miei auguri a voi qui presenti e a tutti gli ascoltatori di Radio Maria, desidero esprimerli con le parole di San Paolo: “Vivendo secondo la verità nella carità, cerchiamo di crescere in ogni cosa verso di lui, che è il capo, Cristo” (cf. Ef 4, 15-16).
Affido alla Madre Santissima la futura attività e l’apostolato di Radio Maria. Possa esso svilupparsi e contribuire a rafforzare qui in terra la civiltà della verità e dell’amore, in armonia con la volontà di Dio e per la sua gloria.
Ringraziandovi di cuore per questa magnifica visita, desidero anche fare i miei auguri di Pasqua a voi qui presenti, alle vostre famiglie, alla grande famiglia di Radio Maria, alla stessa Radio Maria, ai suoi organizzatori, ai suoi ascoltatori, e infine a tutta la mia Patria.

Ai gruppi di lingua italiana
Rivolgo un saluto cordiale ai pellegrini di lingua italiana, in particolare ai Salesiani ed alle Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice ed alle Piccole Sorelle dei Poveri. Saluto inoltre i sacerdoti e i seminaristi di vari Paesi, che partecipano alla “Scuola sacerdotale” del Movimento dei Focolari, ai quali auguro che possano maturare una profonda dedizione al servizio della comunione ecclesiale e dell’unita dei cristiani.
Porgo poi il benvenuto al gruppo dell’Associazione Nazionale Lavoratori Anziani d’Azienda, come pure agli aderenti al “Club 25” della Ciba Farmaceutici di Torre Annunziata. A soci e dirigenti esprimo apprezzamento per l’alta considerazione in cui tengono i valori della famiglia e del lavoro.
Ai giovani, agli ammalati e agli sposi novelli
Un pensiero infine rivolgo ai malati, agli sposi novelli ed ai gruppi di giovani, tra i quali saluto i numerosi studenti, in particolare gli alunni della Scuola “Sacro Cuore” di Pesaro, diretta dalle Piccole Ancelle del Sacro Cuore.
In questo tempo di Quaresima siamo tutti invitati a riscoprire il dono e le esigenze della vocazione cristiana. A voi, giovani, auguro di compiere sempre i doveri della vostra età con generoso impegno, imitando la condizione di Gesù adolescente; voi, ammalati, possiate portare con serena fede il peso del soffrire, come offerta di purificazione; e voi, sposi novelli, nell’amore reciproco siate fedeli e gioiosi ministri del “vangelo della vita”.
