The Church is a prophetic community
Catechesis by Pope John Paul II on the Church
General Audience, Wednesday 13 May 1992 - in Italian & Spanish
"1. In the preceding catecheses we have spoken of the Church as a sacred and organic priestly community which is brought into operation through the sacraments and the exercise of virtues. It was a commentary on the Constitution Lumen Gentium, devoted to the identity of the Church (cf. LG 11). But in the same Constitution we read: "The holy People of God shares also in Christ's prophetic office [munus]; it spreads abroad a living witness to him especially by a life of faith and charity and by offering to God a sacrifice of praise, the tribute of lips which praise his name (cf. Heb 13:15)" (LG 12). According to the Council, then, the Church has a prophetic character as sharing in the same prophetic office of Christ. We will discuss this character in today's catechesis and in the ones following, as we continue in the path laid out by the dogmatic constitution just cited, in which the Council explains this doctrine more explicitly (cf. LG 12). Today we will consider the presuppositions on which the Church's witness of faith is based.
2. In presenting the Church as a prophetic community, the Council's text highlights this feature in relation to the function of witnessing, for the sake of which she was desired and founded by Jesus. Indeed, the Council says that the Church "spreads abroad a living witness to Christ." The reference to Christ's words in the New Testament is obvious, primarily to the words recorded in Acts which the risen Lord addressed to the apostles: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8). With these words Jesus calls attention to the fact that the act of giving witness, which is the particular duty of the apostles, depends on the sending of the Holy Spirit whom he promised and who came on the day of Pentecost. In the power of the Paraclete, who is the Spirit of truth, the witness to Christ crucified and risen becomes a duty and responsibility for the other disciples, especially the women who were present with Christ's mother in the upper room in Jerusalem as members of the first ecclesial community. The women were already privileged, because they were the first to bring the message and were witnesses to Christ's resurrection (cf. Mt 28:1-10).
3. When Jesus said to the apostles: "You will be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8), he was speaking of the witness of faith which would certainly be fulfilled in them in a special way. They were eyewitnesses of Christ's works, and they heard with their own ears the words he spoke; they received directly from him the truths of divine revelation. They were the first to respond with faith to what they saw and heard. This is what Simon Peter did when, in the name of the Twelve, he professed that Jesus is "the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (Mt 16:16). Another time, near Capernaum, when some began to leave Jesus after he announced the mystery of the Eucharist, Simon Peter also did not hesitate to say: "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God" (Jn 6:68-69).
4. The apostles' particular witness of faith was a "gift from above" (cf. Jas 1:17). This was true not only of the apostles, but also of those who at that time and later were to hand on their testimony. Jesus said to them: "The mystery of the kingdom of God has been granted to you" (Mk 4:11). Looking ahead to a critical moment, he gave Peter this assurance: "I have prayed that your own faith may not fail, and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers" (Lk 22:32). On the basis of these significant passages in the New Testament, we can say that, if the Church, as the People of God, shares in Christ's prophetic office by spreading abroad a living witness to him, as we read in the Council (cf. LG 12), then this witness of faith on the Church's part finds its basis and support in the witness of the apostles. This testimony is primordial and fundamental for the prophetic office of the entire People of God.
5. In another conciliar Constitution, Dei Verbum, we read that the apostles "by their oral preaching, by example, and by observances handed on what they had received from the lips of Christ, from living with him, and from what he did, or what they had learned through the prompting of the Holy Spirit" (DV 7). But others too, along with the Twelve, fulfilled the command of Christ about giving the witness of faith in the Gospel, that is, "those apostles [like Paul] and apostolic men who, under the inspiration of the same Holy Spirit, committed the message of salvation to writing" (DV 7). "What was handed on by the apostles includes everything which contributes toward the holiness of life and increase in faith of the People of God, and so the Church, in her teaching, life and worship, perpetuates and hands on to all generations all that she herself is, all that she believes" (DV 8). As is seen, according to the Council there is a close relationship between the Church, the Apostles, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. This is the line of continuity between the Christological mystery and the apostolic and ecclesial institution: a mystery that includes the continual presence and action of the Holy Spirit.
6. In the Constitution on Divine Revelation, the Council formulates the truth about Tradition, by which the apostolic witness continues in the Church as a testimony of faith of the whole People of God "This Tradition of apostolic origin progresses in the Church with the assistance of the Holy Spirit; growth in insight into the realities and words that are transmitted both through the contemplation and study made by believers, who treasure these things in their hearts (cf. Lk 2: 19. 51), and with the experience to date of a deeper intelligence of spiritual things, and through the preaching of those who have received through episcopal succession the sure gift of truth. The Church namely, over the centuries, tends incessantly towards the fullness of divine truth, until the words of God come to fulfillment" (DV 8). According to the Council, then, this advance toward the fullness of divine truth under the protection of the Spirit of truth is fulfilled through insight, experience (such as a vivid sense of spiritual realities), and teaching (cf. DV 10). In this regard, too, Mary is a model for the Church, because she was the first to "keep all these things, reflecting on them in her heart" (Lk 2:19, 51).
7. Under the Holy Spirit's influence, the community professes its faith and applies the truth of faith to daily life. On the one hand there is the whole Church's effort to gain a better understanding of revelation, the object of faith: a systematic study of Scripture and continuous reflection or meditation on the profound significance and value of God's word. On the other hand, in her own life the Church gives the witness of her faith, showing the consequences and implications of revealed doctrine and the superior value which human conduct derives from it. By teaching the precepts promulgated by Christ, she follows the way he opened and shows the excellence of the Gospel message. Every Christian must "acknowledge Christ before others" (cf. Mt 10:32) in union with the whole Church and maintain "good conduct" among non-believers, so that they may arrive at faith (cf. 1 Pet 2:12).
8. In these ways indicated by the Council, that "sense of faith" by which the People of God share in the prophetic office of Christ, is developed and passed on through the "community" witness of the Church. We read in Lumen Gentium: "That discernment in matters of faith is aroused and sustained by the Spirit of truth. It is exercised under the guidance of the sacred teaching authority, in faithful and respectful obedience to which the People of God accepts that which is not just the word of men but truly the Word of God (cf. 1 Thess 2:13). Through it, the People of God adheres unwaveringly to the faith given once and for all to the saints (cf. Jude 3), penetrates it more deeply with right thinking, and applies it more fully in its life" (LG 12). The Council text highlights the fact that this appreciation of the faith is "aroused and sustained by the Spirit of truth." Because of this "sense," in which the divine "anointing" bears fruit, the People of God, guided by the sacred Magisterium, "unwaveringly adheres to this faith" (LG 12). "The entire body of the faithful, anointed as they are by the Holy One, (cf. 1 Jn 2:20, 27) cannot err in matters of belief. They manifest this special property by means of the whole peoples' supernatural discernment in matters of faith when 'from the bishops down to the last of the lay faithful' they show universal agreement in matters of faith and morals" (LG 12).
It should be noted that a clear consequence of the conciliar text is that this "consent in faith and morals" does not derive from a referendum or plebiscite. It can only be understood properly to the extent that one continues to remember Christ's words: "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike" (Mt 11:25)."

Siate i benvenuti in questa Basilica di San Pietro, presso la tomba del Capo degli Apostoli. Vi accolgo con gioia e vi rivolgo volentieri uno speciale pensiero.
Saluto, anzitutto, le Suore Figlie di Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore, le quali festeggiano il 1° Centenario di fondazione della loro Famiglia religiosa.
Carissime, è questo il momento propizio per rinnovare e approfondire la vostra risposta di piena donazione alla missione che il Signore vi ha affidato. Egli volle che la vita di Suor Agostina Cassi, divenisse una feconda testimonianza di servizio ai più bisognosi tra i piccoli e tra gli anziani: due categorie di persone che ancor oggi, pur in mutati contesti, fanno appello alle migliori energie della Chiesa. Siate pronte a ripetere il vostro “sì”, a “nascere nel cuore di Dio . . . per guadagnargli anime”, secondo lo spirito originario dell’Istituto.
Saluto voi pure, Alunni, Insegnanti, Genitori ed Ex Alunni, che vi siete uniti a questo momento di rendimento di grazie per tutto il bene che il Cuore di Cristo, mediante l’opera delle Suore, ha diffuso nelle menti e nelle anime di tanti fanciulli, di tanti anziani e ammalati. Sì, carissimi, rendete grazie a Dio, ricco di misericordia, il quale ha voluto aprire a tutti i tesori del suo cuore!
Il mio saluto si estende anche ai ragazzi ed alle ragazze delle altre Scuole ed Istituti, che prendono parte a questa Udienza. A tutti dico: offrite la vostra giovinezza a Gesù, perché ogni egoismo sia bruciato dalla sua carità e abbiate a conoscere la vera gioia e la vera libertà, che tanto desiderate.
E voi, Genitori ed Insegnanti, non temete di lasciare spazio nella vostra vita alla preghiera, alla meditazione della Parola di Dio e a quella semplice ma ricchissima sintesi di preghiera e meditazione che è il Santo Rosario, da recitare assiduamente, soprattutto in famiglia: siate certi che i veri educatori sono coloro che trasmettono agli altri quella Verità che essi per primi hanno contemplato e ne sono rimasti affascinati.
Desidero affidare tutti voi alla materna protezione di Maria Santissima, in questo mese e in questo giorno 13 di maggio, in cui si celebra nel Santuario di Fatima il 75° anniversario della prima Apparizione ai tre veggenti.
O Madre di Dio, intercedi per le Religiose Figlie di Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore, accompagna il loro cammino secondo il carisma della loro Fondatrice. Benedici gli studi di questi ragazzi e ragazze, sostienili nei prossimi esami scolastici che li attendono e in quelli, ancor più importanti, della vita e della futura professione a servizio dei fratelli!

Wdniu 13 maja tego roku wspominamy 75-lecie Fatimy. 75 lat temu miały miejsce pierwsze objawienia, w których w sposób niezwykły zwracała się Matka Najświętsza do trojga dzieci.
Z perspektywy 75 lat patrzymy ze zdumieniem, z zadziwieniem na to wydarzenie i dziękujemy za wszystko, co się dokonało. Za to, że Pani i Matka naszego Pana swoim Niepokalanym Sercem przeprowadza nas poprzez to trudne stulecie - tragiczne, dramatyczne stulecie - dziękujemy wszyscy, dziękuje w szczególny sposób Papież, dla którego dzień 13 maja jest szczególnie pamiętny.
Polecamy Niepokalanemu Sercu Bogarodzicy dalsze lata tego stulecia, przyszłość Kościoła Europy i całego świata.

Ferner grübe ich die grobe Zahl von Teilnehmern an der Wallfahrt der Katholischen Regionalstelle Buchen aus der Region Odenwald-Tauber sowie die Pilgergruppe aus der Pfarrei Rauenberg. Euch allen und Euren lieben Angehörigen zu Hause sowie den mit uns über Radio und Fernsehen verbundenen Gläubigen erteile ich von Herzen meinen Apostolischen Segen.

Carissimi fratelli e sorelle,
Oggi si celebra il 75 anniversario della Apparizione della Vergine Maria a Fatima ai tre pastorelli Lucia, Francesco e Giacinta. Fra il 13 maggio e il 13 ottobre del 1917, Nostra Signora apparve a quei fanciulli sei volte, una volta al mese. Era la Madre del Cielo che veniva nel nostro mondo, portatrice del messaggio dell’Altissimo ad esortare tutti i popoli alla conversione dei cuori, attraverso la preghiera e la penitenza.
Per celebrare questo avvenimento, ho voluto inviare in Portogallo, quale mio legato, il Segretario di Stato Cardinale Angelo Sodano, per portare ai pellegrini portoghesi e di tanti altri paesi, la gioia del Successore di Pietro per questa Festa mariana. Da Roma, invito quanti sono qui, in unione anche con i brasiliani venuti da Minas Gerais, dal Paranà, da Pernambuco, dal Rio Grande do Sul, da Rio de Janeiro, da Santa Catarina e da Sao Paulo, ad accostarsi a Maria Santissima con un sincero desiderio di rinnovamento interiore, affinché Ella vi porti a Gesù e voi attraverso Cristo vi sentiate membri della famiglia di Dio (cf. Ef 2, 19), risvegliando nell’anima desideri di fratellanza e di pace. O Madre della Speranza “cammina con i popoli verso la solidarietà e l’amore” (Atto di Consacrazione a Nostra Signora di Fatima 13 maggio 1991).
Fa in modo che comprendano che una società non può progredire nel cammino del bene comune, se non avanza nella solidarietà. O Madre del Divino Amore, possa tu essere il rifugio e la forza di quanti confidano in Te. Accresci la nostra fede, dà forza e sicurezza al nostro cammino sulla terra: sii Tu stessa il nostro cammino che porta all’amore di Gesù Cristo.

Hoje, comemora-se o 75 aniversário das aparições da Virgem Maria em Fátima aos três pastorinhos Lúcia, Francisco e Jacinta. Desde 13 de Maio a 13 de Outubro de 1917, Nossa Senhora apareceu àquelas criancinhas seis vezes, uma vez por mês.
Era a Mãe do Céu que vinha ao nosso mundo, portadora da mensagem do Altíssimo convidando todos os povos à conversão dos corações, através da oração e da penitência.
Para celebrar este acontecimento, quis enviar a Portugal, como meu Legado, o Secretário de Estado Cardeal Ângelo Sodano, para exprimir junto com os peregrinos portugueses e de tantos outros países, alegria do Sucessor de Pedro por esta Festa mariana.
De Roma, convido todo vós que estais aqui, em união também com os brasileiros vindos de Minas Gerais, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina e São Paulo, a aproximar des-vos de Maria Santíssima com um sincero desejo de renovação interior, para que Ela vos leve a Jesus e para que, por Cristo, vos sintais membros da família de Deus, despertando na alma ânseios de fraternidade e de paz.
Ó Mãe da Esperança, “caminhai com os povos para a solidariedade e o amor”. Fazei com que entendam que uma sociedade não pode pro gredir no caminho do bem comum, se não progride em solidariedade.
Ó Mãe do Amor Formoso, sede o refúgio e a fortaleza dos que em Vós confiam. Aumentai a nossa fé, dai força e segurança ao nosso caminho na terra: sede Vós mesma o nosso caminho que leva ao amor de Jesus Cristo.

Mi rivolgo ai membri del coro giovanile “Piccola Dubrovnik che canta”. Carissimi, siete venuti a Roma dall’amata città di Dubrovnik a esprimere, con il canto e la preghiera, il desiderio del vostro popolo croato, di vivere in libertà e in pace. In questi drammatici momenti, pieni di dolore e di sofferenza, sia per Dubrovnik e i suoi dintorni, che per le altre regioni della Croazia, come pure della Bosnia-Erzegovina, in cui avete parenti e amici, continuate a pregare insieme con me per la vera pace, per tutti i popoli dei Balcani.
Ai fedeli di lingua italiana
Nel salutare, oggi, i pellegrini di lingua italiana, desidero rivolgere un pensiero ai Missionari ed alle Missionarie di diverse Nazioni e Comunità ecclesiali, che stanno concludendo in Roma, presso l’Università Urbaniana, un corso di rinnovamento teologico-pastorale. Carissimi! Siate sempre annunciatori fedeli e testimoni credibili del Cristo Redentore e del suo Vangelo di salvezza.
Sono lieto di poter rivolgere un pensiero anche ai partecipanti alla Conferenza indetta dal Segretariato Generale dell’Associazione “Sisters Cities Italia”, la quale ha trattato il tema del ricupero delle culture d’origine da parte delle generazioni nate nei Paesi di emigrazione. Mi compiaccio di questo programma, che favorisce la reciproca conoscenza e l’intesa tra i popoli. Auspico che si metta sempre meglio in luce quella positiva riscoperta delle proprie radici culturali, a cui i figli dei migranti aspirano.
Saluto, infine, il gruppo dei Dirigenti dell’Emilia-Romagna della Federazione Italiana Gioco Calcio. Vi ringrazio per questa visita, mentre auspico che l’organizzazione sportiva sappia inculcare nell’animo degli atleti i veri valori umani e cristiani dello sport.
Ai giovani, agli ammalati e agli sposi novelli
Giunga ora il mio saluto ai giovani, agli ammalati ed agli sposi novelli.
Mentre a ciascuno di voi, carissimi, rivolgo il mio cordiale benvenuto, auguro che la Madre di Dio, in questo mese a Lei dedicato, faccia sbocciare in voi i grandi ideali cristiani. Invito particolarmente voi, giovani, ad invocare e lodare la Vergine Maria insieme ai numerosissimi pellegrini che oggi, 13 maggio, si trovano nel Santuario di Fatima per celebrare solennemente il 75° anniversario della prima Apparizione ai piccoli veggenti.
Esorto voi, cari malati, a ricorrere costantemente all’ausilio della Madonna, “Salute degli infermi”, affinché maternamente lenisca il vostro dolore e vi renda capaci di donare agli altri il conforto ricevuto. Vi annunzio di aver istituito, con documento che si pubblica oggi, la “Giornata Mondiale del Malato”, al fine di sensibilizzare tutto il Popolo di Dio, le istituzioni sanitarie cattoliche e la stessa società civile al problema di una migliore assistenza ai malati.
E voi, sposi novelli, pregate la Santa Vergine, “Casa d’oro”, affinché la famiglia, che avete da poco costituito, sia veramente dimora santa e focolare di gioia cristiana.
A tutti la mia benedizione apostolica.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren!
Die Landesgruppe Hessen der Bundestagsfraktion der Christlich–Demokratischen und Christlich–Sozialen Union hat dieses Jahr ihre Dienstreise nach Rom und in den Vatikan unternommen; ich heibe Sie zu dieser Sonderaudienz herzlich willkommen.
Ihr Land hat in den letzten Jahren umwälzende Entwicklungen erfahren mit groben Herausforderungen und Aufgaben für die Kirchen und die Politik.
Bei all unserem Tun und Handeln mub der Mensch der entscheidende Mabstab sein, der unsere Bemühungen ordnet und leitet, der lebendige Wert, dem zu dienen unablässig neue Initiativen verlangt. Die Worte, die für den Menschen die gröbte Bedeutung haben – wie Menschenrechte, Frieden, Gerechtigkeit, Solidarität, Entwicklung – erfahren mitunter durch eine verdächtige Systematik oder durch das Insistieren auf einer opportunistisch ausgerichteten praktischen Politik eine Abwertung Dadurch verlieren sie ihre bewegende und anziehende Kraft. Wir können diese nur zurückgewinnen, wenn die Achtung der menschlichen Person und der Einsatz für sie wieder in den Mittelpunkt der Überlegungen gestellt wird. Wenn wir vom Recht auf Erziehung, auf Gesundheit und auf Arbeit sprechen, sprechen wir von der menschlichen Person. In diesem Zusammenhang darf ich Ihnen und vor allem Frau Bundesminister Hannelore Rönsch, die Sie während dieser Tage begleitet hat, aufrichtig danken für das bewundernswerte Engagement zum Schutz des menschlichen Lebens.
Der Menschlichkeit zum Sieg zu verhelfen ist unser aller Aufgabe. Denn es ist der Mensch, den wir mit unserem Glauben als von Gott als sein Ebenbild geschaffen und für sein ewiges Ziel bestimmt erkennen.
Ihnen allen erbitte ich Gottes Segen sowie sein treues Geleit.
