Christ Is the Son of the Living God
Catechesis by Pope John Paul II on God the Father
General Audience, Wednesday, 30 October 1985 - in Italian & Spanish
"1. I believe in one God, the Father Almighty...I believe in...Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father...."
These words of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed are a synthetic expression of the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople. They make explicit the trinitarian doctrine of the Church, and with them we profess our faith in the Son of God.
Thus, we approach the mystery of Jesus Christ. Today as in ages past, Jesus challenges and questions mankind with his words and actions. Christians, animated by the faith, show him love and devotion. But even some non-Christians sincerely admire him.
What then is the secret of the attraction which Jesus of Nazareth exercises? The search for the full identity of Jesus Christ has from the very beginning engaged the heart and intelligence of the Church, which proclaims him Son of God, Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity.
2. God has repeatedly spoken "by the prophets and in these last days...by a Son," as the Letter to the Hebrews states (1:1-2). God has revealed himself as the Father of an eternal and consubstantial Son. In his turn Jesus has also made known his own divine sonship by revealing the fatherhood of God. The divine paternity and sonship are strictly correlated within the mystery of the Triune God. "The Person of the Father is one, another is the Person of the Son, another is the Person of the Holy Spirit; but the divinity of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory, co-eternal in majesty.... The Son is not made, not created, but generated by the Father alone" (Symbol Quicumque).
3. Jesus of Nazareth who exclaimed: "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes..." also solemnly affirmed: "All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him" (Mt 11:25, 27).
The Son, come into the world to "reveal the Father" as only he knew him, has at the same time revealed himself as Son as he was known only by the Father. This revelation has been sustained by the awareness wherewith, already in his youth, Jesus had made known to Mary and Joseph that "he must be concerned about his Father's business" (cf. Lk 2:49). His word of revelation was moreover strengthened by the Father's testimony, especially on decisive occasions, such as during the baptism in the Jordan. Those present heard the mysterious voice: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (Mt 3:17), or during the transfiguration on the mountain (cf. Mk 9:7 and parallel passages).
4. Jesus Christ's mission to reveal the Father by manifesting himself as Son was not devoid of difficulty. He had to overcome the obstacles deriving from the strictly monotheistic mentality of his hearers. They were formed according to the Old Testament teaching, in fidelity to the tradition going back to Abraham and Moses, and in the struggle against polytheism. We find many traces of this difficulty in the Gospels, and especially in that of John. Jesus was able to overcome it with wisdom, by placing with supreme pedagogic acumen those signs of revelation by which well-disposed disciples let themselves be persuaded.
Jesus spoke to his hearers in a clear and unequivocal way: "The Father who sent me bears witness to me." To the question "Where is your Father?" he replied: "You know neither me nor my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father also...." "I speak of what I have seen with my Father...." To his hearers who objected: "We have one Father, God..." he retorted: "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came forth from God...he sent me...." "Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I am" (cf. Jn 8:12-59).
5. Christ said: "I am," just as centuries earlier at the foot of Mount Horeb, when Moses asked the divine name, God replied, "I am who I am" (cf. Ex 3:14). Christ's words: "Before Abraham was, I am" provoked the violent reaction of his hearers who "sought to kill him, because he called God his Father, making himself equal with God" (Jn 5:18). Jesus did not limit himself to saying: "My Father is working still, and I am working" (Jn 5:17), but he even proclaimed: "I and the Father are one" (Jn 10:30).
Jesus was dragged before the tribunal of the Sanhedrin in the dramatic moments at the close of his life. The High Priest himself addressed to Jesus the question which was also an accusation: "I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God" (Mt 26:63). Jesus replied: "You have said so" (Mt 26:64).
The tragedy was consummated and the sentence of death was pronounced against Jesus.
Christ, revealer of the Father and revealer of himself as Son of the Father, died because he bore witness to the truth of his divine sonship until the very end.
With a heart full of love we wish to repeat to him also today with the Apostle Peter the attestation of our faith: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Mt 16:16)."

Zugleich erteile ich euch allen mit besten Wünschen für eine glückliche Rückkehr in eure Heimat von Herzen meinen besonderen Apostolischen Segen.

Que le Christ vous bénisse, chères Filles et chères Sœurs, qu’il affermisse votre personnalité chrétienne, votre amour de l’Eglise, votre sens missionnaire, qu’il élargisse sans cesse votre charité et qu’il vous garde dans sa joie! A vous, comme aux autres jeunes, nombreux à cette audience, je rappelle que je vous ai écrit une lettre au printemps de cette année internationale de la Jeunesse: elle exprime ce que je voudrais vous dire ce matin.

Witam wszystkich uczestników pielgrzymki jubileuszowej Rodziny Pallotyńskiej na 150-lecie istnienia i pracy Pallotynów; witam pielgrzymów z kościoła ojców karmelitów Krakowie na Piasku; pielgrzymów z parafii bł. Rafała Kalinowskiego z Czernej; z parafii św. Maksymiliana z Olkusza; pielgrzymów z parafii św. Stanisława Biskupa i Męczennika i św. Siamo ormai vicini alla solennità di Tutti i Santi, e per questo vi invito a rivolgere fin d’ora il vostro pensiero a questa grande ricorrenza dell’anno liturgico, nella quale la Chiesa ci vuole ricordare un aspetto essenziale della sua misteriosa realtà: la gloria celeste dei fratelli che ci hanno preceduto nel cammino e nelle lotte della vita presente e che ora, nella visione del Padre vogliono essere in comunione con noi per aiutarci a raggiungere la meta e il premio che ci attendono.

Un affettuoso pensiero di benvenuto anche ai componenti dell’Associazione dei cooperatori salesiani, attualmente presenti a Roma per il loro XX Congresso internazionale, che vede la partecipazione di rappresentanze di ben quaranta nazioni.
Conosco l’impegno col quale intendete realizzare il carisma di don Bosco nella situazione presente della Chiesa e della società, in particolare in favore della formazione cristiana dei giovani, un campo nel quale, come sappiamo, il grande Santo piemontese ricevette da Dio speciali attitudini di prudenza e di saggezza: attitudini che voi, come figli e continuatori, siete chiamati a far fruttificare ulteriormente nel mondo giovanile del nostro tempo, valendoci dei suggerimenti e della materna ispirazione di Maria santissima Ausiliatrice, vostra speciale e potente patrona.
Vi benedico tutti di cuore, con l’auspicio che i lavori del congresso portino alla vostra benemerita famiglia spirituale un nuovo poderoso slancio di fervore e di iniziative apostoliche.

Carissimi giovani presenti a questa udienza!
Col mio saluto cordiale, vi rivolgo il sincero augurio che sappiate far fruttificare, per il bene della Chiesa e della società, le ricchezze interiori di entusiasmo, di idealità, di apertura, che animano la vostra giovinezza. Nella vostra quotidiana esperienza siate sempre testimoni e costruttori di pace e di amore, opponendovi, con ogni forza, all’odio e alla violenza! La festa dei Santi, che dopodomani celebreremo sia per voi un invito a guardare in alto e a imitare l’esempio edificante che vi hanno lasciato una schiera numerosa di grandi uomini di Dio.

E a voi, cari fratelli e sorelle, sofferenti nel corpo e nello spirito, esprimo la mia profonda solidarietà a motivo della malattia che contrassegna questi vostri giorni e che vi inserisce nel mistero insondabile della passione di Cristo Gesù, il Figlio di Dio incarnato.
Uniti a lui, offrite al Padre celeste il vostro dolore, perché contribuisca alla purificazione e all’elevazione dell’umanità, succube del peccato.

Affettuosi sentimenti di gioia desidero manifestare a tutti voi, sposi novelli che siete a Roma per chiedere l’intercessione degli apostoli e dei martiri perché la santissima Trinità ricolmi di grazie la vostra unione consacrata e santificata dal sacramento del matrimonio.
Auspico che, con fede forte e con carità ardente, possiate trasformare la vostra famiglia in una “Chiesa domestica”, nella quale rivivano quotidianamente le virtù che hanno ispirato e corroborato la santa Famiglia di Nazaret: Gesù, Maria e Giuseppe cui affido i vostri propositi e i vostri ideali.

Preghiera e solidarietà per le vittime del tifone in Vietnam
Ho avuto, con qualche ritardo, la dolorosa notizia dei lutti e delle devastazioni provocati nella regione centrale del Vietnam dal violento tifone dei giorni 15 e 16 ottobre.
La stampa ha riferito che si contano centinaia di morti e feriti e che le case distrutte o danneggiate sono centinaia di migliaia. Oltre sessantamila ettari di terre coltivate sono stati allagati.
Desidero esprimere la mia profonda sofferenza per quanto è accaduto in una regione geograficamente lontana, ma a me tanto cara.
Vi invito a pregare con me per la pace terna delle vittime e per il conforto di quanti piangono la scomparsa per qualche familiare o la perdita dei frutti di un faticoso lavoro. Dobbiamo essere tutti partecipi e solidali con quelle popolazioni così duramente colpite: desidero esprimere pubblicamente l’auspicio che gli aiuti internazionali, ai quali non sarà estraneo il generoso concorso della comunità cattolica, siano pari alle gravi ed urgenti necessità causate dal tifone.
Vorrei, infine, assicurare i pastori e i fedeli nella fede di quella regione, della nostra cordiale vicinanza nella prova e nel sostegno della nostra preghiera. Ad essi invio una particolare benedizione.
