The God of the Covenant

Catechesis by Pope John Paul II on God the Father
General Audience, Wednesday, 25 September 1985 - in Italian, Portuguese & Spanish

"1. We seek to reply progressively in our catechetical talks to the question: Who is God? It concerns an authentic reply, because it is based on the word of God's self-revelation. The certainty of faith as well as the intellect's conviction enlightened by faith characterizes this response.

2. Let us return again to the foot of Mount Horeb. Moses was pasturing the flock there. He heard from the midst of the burning bush the voice which said: "Put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground" (Ex 3:5). The voice continued: "I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." He is the God of the fathers who sent Moses to free his people from the Egyptian bondage.

We know that after having received this mission, Moses asked God his name. He received the reply: "I am who I am." The exegetical, theological and magisterial tradition of the Church has interpreted this reply as the revelation of God as "Being." Paul VI repeated this in the Credo of the People of God (1968).

One can attain a richer and more precise idea of God in the light of the history of salvation in the reply given by God: ”"I am who I am." God - Yahweh - reveals himself above all as the God of the covenant by sending Moses in virtue of this name: "I am who I am for you; I am here as the God who desires the covenant and salvation," as the God who loves you and saves you. God is thus presented as a Being who is a Person. He reveals himself to persons, whom he treats as such. God has gone forth in a certain sense, from his "solitude" to communicate himself, already in creating the world, by his opening to the world and especially to men created in his image and likeness (cf. Gen 1:26). The revelation of the name "I am who I am" (Yahweh) seems to especially set out in relief the truth that God is the Being-Person who knows, loves and draws all people to himself, the God of the covenant.

3. God prepares a new stage of the covenant, a new stage of the history of salvation in this conversation with Moses. God's initiative of the covenant marks the history of salvation through numerous events, as the fourth Eucharistic Prayer shows in the words: "Again and again you offered a covenant to man."

God-Yahweh is presented as "the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob," in conversing with Moses at the foot of Mount Horeb. He is the God who had drawn up a covenant with Abraham (cf. Gen 17:1-14) and with his descendants, the patriarchs, the founders of the family of the chosen people, which has become the People of God.

4. However, the initiatives of the God of the covenant go back even before Abraham. The Book of Genesis mentions the covenant with Noah after the flood (cf. Gen 9:1-17). One can even speak of the primeval covenant before original sin (cf. Gen 2:15-17). We can say that, in the perspective of salvation, God desired to establish a covenant with his people from the beginning of human history. Salvation is the communion of endless life with God. The "tree of life" (cf. Gen 2:9) in the earthly paradise symbolized it. All the covenants which God has sealed with the human race after the sin of Adam confirm the truth that God wills man's salvation. The God of the covenant is the God "who gives himself" in a mysterious way—the God of revelation and the God of grace. He not only makes himself known to man, but he makes him a sharer in the divine nature (2 Pet 1:4).

5. The covenant reaches its definitive stage in Jesus Christ—the "new" and "eternal covenant" (Heb 12:24; 13:20). It witnesses to the complete originality of that truth about God which we profess in the Christian creed. In pagan antiquity, the divinity was the object of human aspiration. The revelation of the Old and still more of the New Testament shows God who is seeking man, who draws near to him. It is God who wishes to make a covenant: "I shall be your God and you shall be my people" (Lev 26:12); "I shall be their God and they shall be my people" (2 Cor 6:16).

6. The covenant is a completely free and sovereign divine initiative, just as creation is. It reveals in a still more eminent way the importance and the meaning of creation in the depths of divine liberty. The wisdom and love which guide the transcendent liberty of the God-Creator stand out still more in the transcendent liberty of the God of the covenant.

7. Through the covenant, especially that full and definitive covenant in Jesus Christ, God becomes in a certain way immanent in regard to the world. Yet he completely preserves his own transcendence. The incarnate God, and still more the crucified God, remains an incomprehensible and ineffable God. But he becomes for us still more incomprehensible and ineffable precisely in so far as he is manifested as a God of an infinite, inscrutable love.

8. We do not wish to anticipate the themes of future catecheses. Let's go back again to Moses. The revelation of God's name at the foot of Mount Horeb prepared that stage of the covenant which the God of the fathers would have wished to make with his people on Sinai. It sets out in relief the monotheistic sense of the creed based on the covenant in a strong and expressive way: "I believe in one God!" God is one, he is unique.

The Book of Exodus states: "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me" (Ex 20:2-3). We find the basic formula of the Old Testament creed expressed in the words of Deuteronomy: "Hear O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord" (Dt 6:4; cf. Dt 4:39-40).

Isaiah will give to this monotheistic creed of the Old Testament a magnificent prophetic expression: "You are my witnesses—says the Lord—my servants whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no God was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior.... You are my witnesses—says the Lord—and I am God, always the same from eternity" (Is 43:10-13). "Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God, and there is no other" (Is 45:22).

9. This truth about the one God constitutes the fundamental deposit of the two Testaments. St. Paul expresses it in the New Covenant in the words: "One God and Father of all who is above all and through all and in all" (Eph 4:6). The same Paul combated pagan polytheism (cf. Rom 1:23; Gal 3:8) with an ardor no less than that of the Old Testament. He proclaims with equal firmness that this one true God "is God of all, both of the circumcised and the uncircumcised, of both Jews and Gentiles" (cf. Rom 3:29-30). The revelation of a one true God given in the old covenant to the chosen people of Israel, was destined for the whole human race. Humanity would have found in monotheism the expression of the conviction at which man can arrive even with the light of reason. If God is perfect, infinite, subsistent Being, he must be One. The truth revealed in the Old Testament has become the faith of the universal Church in the new covenant, by means of Jesus Christ. The Church confesses: "I believe in one God."

A gruppi italiani
