In 1983, Pope St John Paul II canonized St Leopold Mandić, who was born in Castelnuovo di Cattaro.
Our Lady of Philermos is the patroness of Montenegro (as well as of Rhodes and Sovereign Military Order of Malta). She is one of the first Christian icons, according to legend painted by St Luke and now housed in the National Museum of Montenegro, Cetinje.
