Ato de Confiança a Nossa Senhora de Fátima
Oração do Papa São João Paulo II
Santuário de Fátima, 13 de Maio de 1991 - in Italian & Portuguese

“Santa Mãe do Redentor, Porta do céu, Estrela do mar,

preparando-se para o Terceiro Milénio cristão;

a confiança a povos longamente oprimidos e humilhados;
Mãe da vida, pelos múltiplos sinais com que nos acompanhastes defendendo-nos do mal e do poder da morte;
em que senti junto a mim a Vossa presença salvadora;

Que os povos não reabram novos fossos de ódio e vingança;

Convosco queremos seguir Cristo, Redentor do homem:
o Vosso Filho no Céu. Amém!"

"Mary has been with me since day one. Mary is my godmother, she's always with me.

Maria é minha madrinha. Ela está sempre comigo."

Anna-Maria

"Our Lady of Fatima for me is my mother in the sky and is my mother here also and, wherever I go, she’s with me… For me to come to Fatima is, you know it’s like not to be in paradise because I don’t know what paradise is, it’s too good, but you leave with her the problems and you feel in the sky here, together with Our Lady and Jesus. So for me one of the best things is to come to Fatima. I am much devoted to Fatima.

Eu sou muito devota de Fátima"

Chantal

"I forgot a little bit about Our Lady until I was taken by the scruff of my neck. She didn't forget about me, I was her child, a child of Mary in my childhood. So she took me to Medjugorje and then she taught me about her love for me, and I learnt to love her there. Loving her has drawn me to her son, has drawn me to Jesus."

Dina Maria

"Our Lady to me represents a mother and a good friend."

Pai Francisco

"Our Lady for me is a mother and here in the little chapel I feel always at home, especially when I’m down, when I’m troubled and tired from my work and my requirements and the exigencies of my vocation. And, when I sit in quiet and peace in front of the statue of Our Lady, she feels me with so great a peace and love that I can renew my vocation and can continue this work, transmitting the Gospel and being a sign of God’s mercy for all the pilgrims here in Fátima."

Father Francisco is a priest of the diocese of Our Lady of Fátima & gives his something about Mary in English and Portuguese.

Frederico

"To me, Mary is the best example of trust and how to give ourselves to the other. She is the Mother of God and our mother."

Frederico gives his algo sobre Maria in English & Portuguese.

Gloria

Henrique

"Our Lady of Fatima is our mother."

João

"It gives me tremendous delight and courage to think about the yes that Maria said - the fiat that is what is asked from us all - and she was so committed to the very end."

Joao Paulo

"So I decided that year (2007) to go to the shrine of Fatima, to the shrine of Lourdes and to shrine of Our Lady of Medjugorje. And I said 'This time I'm going as a pilgrim and not as a tourist.' And since that moment my life has completely changed, 100%. From that moment I start looking for Mary, for Jesus, for God - all my life completely changed. After my first visit to Lourdes (which was so beautiful as well - I received so many graces there), I went to Medjugorje for the first time and Medjugorje was an experience I will never forget. First time I went there, I came back full of faith and first thing was - I have to go to Mass more often. Suddenly, after 6 months, I was going to Mass daily. After being 7 years away from Mass, I start going to Mass daily, which was a very, very big grace. Since then I start reading the books of the saints: Padre Pio, Mother Teresa, St Thérèse of Lisieux, St Teresa of Avila, and this is so much graces being given to me. Also I learned so much, because Our Lady, it's amazing what Our Lady does. It's like, this year, I went to the Youth Festival in Medjugorje. After 1 week, I was thinking 'But I haven't spent a minute with Our Lady yet? What's happening? I've been to the church, I've been in front of the tabernacle a lot of times, but what's happening? Then something touched my heart and said 'I'm calling you not to me but I'm calling you to Jesus - that's why I'm calling you to Medjugorje.'  When we go to Medjugorje the visionaries are there, but straight away we feel a call to go Jesus, not to go to the visionaries, not to go to Our Lady, because Our Lady is always calling us to come back to her son Jesus, who loves us so much. For me so far, Medjugorje is just an amazing grace that happened in my life. Our Lady is coming to us, to our rescue, she's inviting us to come back to Jesus."

José do Carmo

"Our Lady is very much part of me because I have her in my Christian name and this is something that I have felt very close all throughout my life, that Our Lady is always with me, looking after me and showing me the way, not that I always take it but she is always there showing me the way. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a very important beam of hope because she tells us that if we have, even in our last breath, if we just think of her as our light and our way she will be there to help us getting to her Son. So there's a hope message there that is very important for my life, it has always been there for my life."

José do Carmo gives his something about Mary in English & Portuguese.

José María

"It’s been a very special grace being brought up in a place like Fatima, where Our Lady of Fatima appeared. Everyone that has been at Fatima has surely felt the motherly atmosphere and security, safety, in that place because, well, that's what it was all about: Our Lady being made known by three little humble children."

José María gives his something about Mary in English & Portuguese.

Josefa

"Mary, she means just so much. She's just more than inspiration for all of us. She's the queen of love, the queen of mothers, she's our strength, she's the star."

Joséfa gives her something about Mary in English & Portuguese.

Leonor

"Our Lady to me is a gift that God gave me because she gave me the biggest ‘yes’ I’ve ever listened to in my whole life."

Lucia

"Our Lady is our mother.
Nossa Senhora é nossa mãe."

Manuel

"Mary is the patron of our country for almost 400 years now and she has managed to protect us and safeguard us; without this intercession we probably would not be an independent country. And she keeps protecting us through the ages, through all these hardships that we have, like from forest fires to political and economic crises, and she’s always there to listen to our needs. Since she has this enormous heart that keeps us in her embrace and safe, she has also given us an example of how we ourselves should behave and do the same for others, and this is why we can never be grateful enough for what she has been doing for us."

Manuel gives his something about Mary in English & Portuguese.

Manuela

"Our Lady of Fatima is my mother, mother of my children."

Manuela gives her something about Mary in English & Portuguese.

Maria

"I love Mary because she has been helping me all my life."

Maria gives her response in English & Portuguese.

Maria

"Mary for me is everything.

Nossa Senhora é tudo para mim."

Maria

"I don't think there are words to describe what is Holy Mary for me.  She is my guide, my best friend, the one to whom I pray and I share with her in my moments of sadness, and not only sadness - I think I have always Holy Mother in my heart."

Maria

"It's difficult to explain about Mary: there's like hope, someone there to pick me up."

Maria

"Our Lady is very important in my life."

Maria

"I’m very, very fond of Our Lady because I know that I’ve got very strong faith."

Maria-Anna

"On 12th May I went to Fatima with some friends and my sister, and we went to see the first visit of Pope Francis in Portugal. … It was very special. When he came we had I think it was eight minutes of silence, eight minutes of oracion to Our Lady of Fatima. I don’t really have words to describe because it was really intense because it was silence. Imagine, we were half a million people! So it was incredible because it was half a million people for eight minutes in pure silence. It was really, really silent .. you could hear the birds and everything…  I think if a person, even if a person who doesn’t believe, it was so intense I think it can change people because it was a moment so unique and so incredible."

Maria-Anna

"In the Bible I find Christ Himself alive, speaking directly to my heart. I think that it's easy to look at the Bible just as an old book with beautiful words and really wise advice, which it is, but it's really more than that. It is a personal encounter with God and through that, it's also really an encounter with myself. I've had very concrete experiences of this in my life, in a particular moment of crucial decisions, the Word of God in the Bible was really the only light pointing at the truth, of the truth of who I am and who I was created to be, and it was really important in making the right decisions. And in my daily life I can see God working in me through His words, because it is Christ Himself present and showing me His love and the right decisions to take."

Maria-Antonia

"I can't live without being close to Mary, to protect me.  She's like my mother, so anything I need I go and ask her."

Maria-Antonia gives her algo sobre Maria in English and Portuguese.

Marie-Antonia

"For me Our Lady is first of all Our Lady of Fatima. Who is Our Lady of Fatima? She is a mother, and she is a protector and someone we turn to when we have no-one else to turn to in life."

Marie-Antonia gives her algo sobre Maria in English & Portuguese.

Maria-Olivia

"I love very much to pray to Our Lady of Fatima because when I want to help the people I always pray for all my family and for my friends, for everybody, all the world. I feel so good, I feel so my heart nice inside when I am with Our Lady in Fatima."

Maria-Olivia gives her something about Maria in English & Portuguese.

Maria-Teresa

"For me, Mother Mary is our mother of all of us Christians and of mankind; she is the mother of Jesus Our Lord and she guides us to him. She takes care of us during our lifetime in this world, and we can always come to her to ask her for her help when we are troubled, when we have doubts, when we are going down with temptation, in all the very difficult situations we can call on her to help us because she wants our salvation to come in the communion of the Trinity: with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. And she's a mother who cares the whole time for us and takes care of us, so we can call on her whenever we want and we must trust in her to help us."

Maria-Teresa gives her algo sobre Maria in English & Portuguese.

Marta

"I think my devotion to Our Lady of Fatima began when I was really young because my grandmother always had a little statue of her and here in Portugal everywhere we go we have little figures of Our Lady. I always had an interest and always thought 'Why does everyone love her so much and take such a great interest in her?' I have been to Fatima several times but one of the last times I went, I went in a pilgrimage and it took us five days to get there (and usually it just takes us two hours). So I went walking for five days and it was such a great relief and I was so full of friendship and happiness when I saw Our Lady and we prayed altogether. It was such a special moment and I got why people loved her so much."

Marta, gives her something about Mary in English & Portuguese.

Rita

"For me Our Lady is the Lady of the yes - she said yes to everything, she said yes to everything that happened. And she is the Lady of silence because she said yes to everything in silence."

Rita gives her something about Maria in English & Portuguese.

Teresa

"Mary is the beginning of everything. She's the one who said yes, she's the Mother of Christ and thanks to her we have our Saviour, our Redeemer, our Sustainer."

Teresa gives her response in English & Portuguese.

Accipio te in mea omnia. Praebe mihi cor tuum, Maria. - St Louis de Montfort

St John Paul II took his motto Totus Tuus from this quote.

"I am totally yours and all that I have is yours.
I accept you for my all. O Mary, give me your heart.”

Pope Benedict XVI's reflections on his pilgrimage to Portugal
General Audience, Wednesday 19 May 2010 - in Croatian, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese & Spanish

"Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today I wish to review with you the various stages of the apostolic journey I took to Portugal in these past days, inspired mainly by a desire to honour the Virgin Mary, who at Fatima passed on to her seers and to pilgrims an intense love for the Successor of Peter. I thank God for having given me the opportunity to pay homage to that People, to its long and glorious history of faith and of Christian witness. Therefore, just as I asked you to accompany in prayer this pastoral visit, so I now invite you to join with me in giving thanks to the Lord for its happy outcome and its conclusion. I entrust to Him the fruits that the visit has brought about and will bring about for the community of the Portuguese Church and for the entire population. I renew my heartfelt gratitude to the President of the Republic, Mr Aníbal Cavaco Silva, along with the other state authorities, who welcomed me so cordially and did their utmost to ensure that everything might progress in the best possible way. With intense affection I recall my brother bishops of the Portuguese dioceses, whom I had the joy of embracing in their own homeland. I thank them fraternally for the work they carried out in the spiritual and organizational preparation of my visit, and also for the considerable effort involved in its realization. I extend a special thought to the Patriarch of Lisbon, Cardinal José da Cruz Policarpo, to the Bishops António Augusto dos Santos Marto of Leiria-Fatima and Manuel Macário do Nascimento Clemente of Oporto and to their respective collaborators, and likewise to the various bodies of the Bishops' Conference led by Bishop Jorge Ortiga.

Throughout the visit, which coincided with the 10th anniversary of the beatification of the shepherd children Jacinta and Francisco, I felt spiritually sustained by my beloved predecessor, the Venerable John Paul II, who travelled to Fatima three times, in thanksgiving for that "invisible hand" which saved him from death in the attempt of 13 May, here in St Peter's Square. On the evening of my arrival I celebrated Holy Mass in Lisbon in the charming setting of Terreiro do Paço, facing the River Tagus. It was a festive liturgical gathering, full of hope and animated by the joyous participation of a great many faithful. At the capital from where, over the course of centuries, many missionaries departed in order to take the Gospel to various continents I encouraged the several members of the local Church to pursue a vigorous evangelizing action within society's diverse milieux, in order to be sowers of hope in a world often marked by distrust. In particular, I appealed to believers to proclaim the death and Resurrection of Christ, the heart of Christianity, fulcrum and support of our faith and reason for our joy. I also expressed these sentiments during the meeting with representatives of the world of culture, which took place in the Cultural Centre of Belém. On that occasion, I highlighted the patrimony of values with which Christianity has enriched the culture, art and heritage of the Portuguese people. In this noble land it is possible as it is in every other country deeply influenced by Christianity to build a future of fraternal good will and collaboration with other cultural initiatives, by being open to sincere, reciprocal and respectful dialogue.

I then went to Fatima, a small city characterized by an atmosphere of real mysticism, in which one senses the almost palpable presence of Our Lady. There, in that admirable Shrine, the spiritual heart of Portugal and the destination of a multitude of people from greatly diverse places on earth, I became a pilgrim among pilgrims. After having paused in prayerful and moving contemplation in the Chapel of the Apparitions in the Cova da Iria where I entrusted to the Immaculate Heart of Mary the joys and expectations, as well as the problems and sufferings, of the entire world I had the joy of presiding at a Vespers Celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Church of the Most Holy Trinity. Inside this large modern temple, I expressed my deep appreciation to the priests, men and women religious, deacons, and to the seminarians who came from every part of Portugal, as I thanked them for their often silent and not always easy witness, and for their fidelity to the Gospel and to the Church. In this Year for Priests, which is nearing its end, I encouraged the priests to give priority to devout listening to the Word of God, to the intimate knowledge of Christ, to the intense celebration of the Eucharist, while emulating the luminous example of the Holy Curé d'Ars. I did not omit to entrust and consecrate the priests of all the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, true model of a disciple of the Lord.

In the evening, I participated in an evocative candlelit procession with the thousands of people who had chosen to join in the event in this huge square in front of the Shrine. It was a stupendous manifestation of faith in God and of devotion to his and our Mother, expressed in the recitation of the Holy Rosary. This prayer, so dear to the Christian people, has found in Fatima a central driving force for the whole Church and the world. The "White Lady", in the apparition of 13 June, told the three shepherd children: "I want you to recite the Rosary every day." We could say that Fatima and the Rosary are practically synonymous.

My visit to this truly special place reached its climax in the Eucharistic Celebration of 13 May, the anniversary of the first apparition of the Virgin Mary to Francisco, Jacinta and Lúcia. In echoing the words of the Prophet Isaiah, I invited that immense prayerful gathering, united in such great love and devotion at the feet of the Virgin, to rejoice fully in the Lord (cf Is 61, 10), so that her merciful love, which accompanies us on our pilgrimage on this earth, may be the spring of our great hope. And hope is precisely what fills the demanding yet at the same time comforting message that Our Lady left to us at Fatima. It is a message centred on prayer, on penance and on conversion that reaches beyond the threats, dangers and horrors of history to invite man to have faith in God's action: to cultivate the great Hope, to experience the Lord's grace and thus to fall in love with Him, who is the source of love and peace.

In this perspective, my meeting with the social assistance and pastoral organizations was especially meaningful and engrossing. To these I emphasized the Good Samaritan's way of meeting the needs of our poorest brothers and sisters and of serving Christ, by promoting the common good. Indeed, it is at Fatima a school of faith and of hope, since it is also a school of charity and service to others that many young people learn the importance of selfless giving. In this context of faith and prayer, the important, fraternal meeting with the Portuguese Episcopate took place, at the conclusion of my visit to Fatima. It was a moment of intense spiritual communion, in which together we thanked the Lord for the faithfulness of the Church that is alive in Portugal and also entrusted to the Virgin the community's hopes and our pastoral concerns. I also spoke of these hopes and pastoral prospects during the Holy Mass celebrated in the historic and symbolic city of Porto, the "City of the Virgin", which was the last stage of my pilgrimage through the land of Lusitania. Addressing the large crowd of the faithful gathered in the Avenida dos Aliados, I recalled the commitment to witness to the Gospel in every context, offering the Risen Christ to the world so that every difficult, painful and frightening situation might be transformed through the Holy Spirit into an opportunity for growth and life.

Dear brothers and sisters, my pilgrimage to Portugal has been a moving experience, rich with many spiritual gifts. While the memory of this unforgettable journey the warm, spontaneous welcome, the enthusiasm of the people remain fixed in my mind and heart, I give praise to the Lord for having opened to the world, through Mary's apparitions to the three shepherd children, a privileged space in which to encounter the divine mercy that heals and saves. At Fatima, the Blessed Virgin invites everyone to consider the earth as the place where we make our pilgrimage towards the definitive homeland, which is Heaven. In reality we are all pilgrims, and we need our Mother to guide us. The theme of my apostolic journey to Portugal was, "With You We Walk in Hope: Wisdom and Mission". And at Fatima the Blessed Virgin Mary invites us to walk with great hope, letting ourselves be guided by the "wisdom from on high" manifest in Jesus, the wisdom of love so that we might carry Christ's light and joy to the world. I therefore invite you to join with me in prayer, asking the Lord to bless the efforts of those in that beloved nation who dedicate themselves to the service of the Gospel and to the search for the true good of man, of every human being. Furthermore we pray that, through the intercession of Mary Most Holy, the Holy Spirit may make this apostolic trip fruitful, and may give life to the mission of the Church worldwide, instituted by Christ, to proclaim to all peoples the Gospel of truth, peace and love."

Papa João Paulo II's reflections about his 1982 pilgrimage to Fatima

O convite à conversão e à penitência é a primeira e fundamental palavra do Evangelho.

Papa John Paul II's words ahead of his 1982 pilgrimage to Fatima
General Audience, Wednesday 12 May 1982 - in Italian, Portuguese & Spanish

Intensifiquem a própria devoção a Nossa Senhora

"Caríssimos Irmãos e Irmãs
1. Sede bem-vindos!

Exorto que me acompanheis com as vossas orações."

Oração à Rainha da Polónia / 16

"Tu és a honra do nosso povo" (Jdt 15, 10).

E dou-vos a Bênção Apostólica."

John Paul II's homily at Mass in Church of St Anthony of the Portuguese
Rome, Wednesday 23 May 1979 - also in French, Italian, Portuguese & Spanish

"Lord Cardinal Patriarch and revered Brothers in the Episcopate,
Your Excellencies, Beloved sons and daughters of "most faithful" Portugal,

May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with you all!

I greet you cordially with appreciation and gratitude for the joy of this meeting. And through you, particularly through the beloved bishops, my brothers, and the ambassadors, I greet the beloved Portuguese people.

Love of Christ has gathered us here with the purpose of praising and thanking God. The reason is a call and a response that reach us through eight centuries. The call made by my predecessor Alexander III in the Bull Manifestis Probatum, to your first king Don Alfonso Henriques, was addressed to Portugal and said: "Submissive and devoted to the Holy Roman Church, engaged in... the expansion of the frontiers of Christian faith: may the Apostolic See always rejoice in such a devoted and glorious son and rest in your love" (Bull Manifestis Probatum, 23 May 1179; Lisbon, Torre do Tombo, Codices de Bulas, m. 16, doc. 20). And the response was given by the people of Portugal throughout its history.

On this significant date, here in the church of St Anthony of the Portuguese in Rome, very near St Peter's tomb, among the reasons for common rejoicing — as the Cardinal Patriarch stated in his address — in our praise of God there stand out the relations between Portugal and the Apostolic See in eight centuries of history passed together.

What characterized this path as a whole can perhaps be summed up as follows: faithfulness to the Church, Mother and Teacher of peoples, on the part of Portugal, from the time that its first king, by means of his letter (Claves regni, Letter to Pope Lucius II, 13 December 1143) offered the Portuguese land to the Roman Church; and good will on the part of the Holy See which even granted Portugal the title of "most faithful" in the person of its Sovereigns (cf Benedict XIV, Charissime in Christo to the king of Portugal Don Juan V, 17 December 1748. Bullarium Romanum).

In the select representation that I contemplate here today praying with the Pope, I see the heritage and identity of Christian Portugal, with ancient and renewed faithfulness, with past and present aspirations. They are known to God and at this moment I leave in my heart the respectful evocations and due mentions of persons and facts that marked, in your country, the life of the Church, one and unique, concerned, always and everywhere, about man's vocation in Christ (cf Redemptor Hominis, 18).

In our liturgy of thanksgiving to the Lord, I would like to mention briefly three coordinates of the trajectory of faithfulness to God and to the Church in the Christian life and piety of the beloved Portuguese people, as so many other reasons for rejoicing in the Lord and for stimulation for the future. These coordinates are:

— It is no mere chance that Christ, the Redeemer and Saviour, figures as an eloquent symbol in the corners of the flag of your country, and that his cross distinguished the 16th century caravels bound for glorious adventures, also because of "Christian daring" (Luis de Camoes, Lusiadas, canto VII, 14).

The Blessed Virgin, Mother of God and Mother of the Church, Our Lady, as you prefer to call her, who, in "the Lusitanian home" and "land of St Mary", passed at a certain moment from being "Lady" to being "Queen of Portugal" (cf Document of proclamation of Our Lady of Conception, as Patron Saint of Portugal, in the Cortes of Lisbon, in 1646. Quoted by Fr Miguel Oliveira in his Historia eclesiastica de Portugal, Lisbon 1958).

— The experience of an essential dimension of the Church, which is missionary by her very nature (Ad Gentes, 1): the work of evangelization carried out is one of the most genuine religious glories of Portugal (cf Pio XII Saeculo exeunte octavo, 13 giugno 1940).

In the light of the past, this agreeable meeting of today — Portugal of the present and the present of the Church in your country with the Successor of Peter — is a resolution of continuity in the line of your faithfulness. Would that, seeking the common good —
according to God, the supreme law of society — all the Portuguese may dedicate themselves to cultivating spiritual values in a social climate of morality, justice, peace and fraternal love.

Yes, beloved Portuguese: cultivate personal dignity, preserve the good family spirit and respect life and the Lord of life and the Lord of history. May you, living and bearing witness to your option for Christ, continue to listen to your epic writer and "do a great deal in holy Christianity" (Luis de Camoes, Lusiadas, canto VII, 3).

In you present here I bless your land and your people — persons, families and communities, with your leaders, thinking also of your emigrants and, with particular affection, of my brother bishops. The Pope loves you all and trusts in you.

And concentrating our minds and hearts on Christ "for whom and by whom all things exist" (Heb 2, 10) in this Eucharist and through the mediation of Our Lady and of the saints of your land, let us continue praising, thanking and supplicating God the Father for Portugal, united in the Holy Spirit. Amen."
