Pope Saint John Paul II was a pilgrim to Switzerland for the third (& final) time in 2004, visiting Bern on his 103rd apostolic voyage (he had previously visited in 1982 & 1984).

"Sehr geehrter Herr Präsident, Verehrte Mitbrüder, sehr geehrte Damen und Herren!
1. Zum dritten Mal führt mich die Göttliche Vorsehung in die Schweiz, in dieses schöne Land, in dem sich verschiedene Sprachen und Kulturen begegnen. Erneut darf ich hier einem Volk nahe sein, das zugleich alten Traditionen verpflichtet und für Neues offen ist.
Meinen ganz herzlichen Gruß richte ich an den verehrten Herrn Bundespräsidenten der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft, dem ich für die guten Willkommensworte danke. Ebenso grüße ich die anwesenden Autoritäten. Ich bin Ihnen für den freundlichen Empfang sowie für alles dankbar, was auch dieses Mal unternommen wurde, um meinen Aufenthalt in der Schweiz zu erleichtern.
Brüderlich grüße ich den Präsidenten der Schweizer Bischofskonferenz und die übrigen anwesenden Bischöfe. Über sie richte ich meinen Gruß auch an alle Gemeinden in jedem Kanton eures Landes. Mit Respekt gehen meine Gedanken auch zu den Christen der anderen Konfessionen und zu allen Menschen guten Willens, die in diesem Land tätig sind.
2. Ziel dieser apostolischen Pilgerfahrt ist es, den katholischen Jugendlichen der Schweiz anläßlich ihres nationalen Jugendtreffens zu begegnen. Ich werde mit ihnen heute Abend in der Bern Arena zusammenkommen. Für sie wie auch für mich wird es ein Fest sein.
Es ist die Pflicht, das Evangelium zu verkündigen, die mich drängt, mich auf die Pfade der Welt zu begeben, um es den Männern und Frauen des dritten Jahrtausends, besonders den jungen Generationen, erneut vorzustellen. Christus ist der Erlöser des Menschen! Wer an ihn glaubt und ihm folgt, baut mit an der Gesellschaft der Liebe und des Friedens.
3. Liebe Einwohner der Schweiz, wenn ich in eure Häuser eintrete und die verschiedenen Orte besuche, an denen ihr lebt und eure täglichen Aktivitäten verrichtet, erlaube ich mir geistigerweise an das Herz jedes einzelnen von euch zu klopfen. Allen möchte ich die frohe Botschaft des Evangeliums von Christus dem Erlöser bringen und jedem den guten Wunsch seines Friedens entbieten. In dieser Gesinnung erflehe ich vom Herrn die überfließende Fülle seiner Gnade über das ganze Land. Gott segne die Schweiz!"

"Dear Swiss young people, I am glad to be with you here today. Your enthusiasm has rejuvenated my heart! Thank you, thank you for your cordiality. You are the good future of Switzerland.
1. Steh auf! Lève-toi! Alzati! Sto se! [arise!] (Lk 7, 14).
The Lord's words to the young man of Nain ring out loudly at our gathering today and are addressed to you, dear young friends, young Catholics of Switzerland!
The Pope has come from Rome once again to listen with you to these words from Christ's lips and to echo them. I greet you all with affection, dear friends, and thank you for your warm welcome. I also greet your bishops, the priests, religious and the animators who accompany you on your journey.
I address an especially respectful greeting to Mr Joseph Deiss, President of the Swiss Confederation; to Pastor Samuel Lutz, President of the Synodal Council of the Reformed Churches of Bern-Jura-Soleure; and to your friends of other confessions who have desired to take part in this event.
2. The Gospel of Luke tells the story of an encounter: on the one hand there is the melancholy procession accompanying the young son of a widowed mother to the cemetery; on the other, the festive group of disciples who follow Jesus and listen to him. Today too, young friends, you can find yourselves part of that sad procession winding its way through the village of Nain. This is what happens if you allow yourselves to give in to desperation, if the mirages of the consumer society seduce you and detach you from true joy to swallow you up in transient pleasures, if indifference and superficiality envelop you, or if, as you face evil and suffering, you doubt God's presence and God's love for every person and seek to appease your inner thirst for true, pure love in the drifting of confused emotions.
At exactly such moments Christ comes close to each one of you and, as he said to the young man of Nain, he says a word to you which comes as a shock: "arise". "Accept the invitation that will set you on your feet again".
These are not simply words: it is Jesus himself who stands before you, the Word of God made flesh. He is the "true light that enlightens every man" (Jn 1, 9), the truth that sets us free (cf Jn 14, 6), the life that the Father gives us in abundance (cf Jn 10, 10). Christianity is not just a book of culture or an ideology, nor is it merely a system of values or principles, however lofty they may be. Christianity is a person, a presence, a face: Jesus, who gives meaning and fullness to the life of man.
3. Well, I say to you, dear young people: Do not be afraid to meet Jesus: indeed, seek him in reading Sacred Scripture with attention and availability and in personal and communal prayer; seek him in active participation in the Eucharist; seek him as you meet a priest for the sacrament of Reconciliation; seek him in the Church which is manifest to you in parish groups, movements and associations; seek him in the face of the suffering brother who is in need and a stranger.
This search marks the existence of so many of your young contemporaries on their way towards the World Youth Day that will be celebrated in Cologne next summer. I cordially invite you too, straightaway, to take part in this great event of faith and witness.
I too, like you, have been 20. I enjoyed sports, skiing, acting. I studied and I worked. I had desires and worries. In those years, now so long ago, when my native land was wounded by war and then by the totalitarian regime, I sought the meaning to give to my life. I found it in following the Lord Jesus.
4. Youth is the period in which you, dear young woman, dear young man, wonder what to do with your life, how to contribute to making the world a little better, how to encourage justice and build peace.
This is the second invitation I am addressing to you: "Listen!" Do not tire of training yourselves in the difficult discipline of listening. Listen to the voice of the Lord who is speaking to you through the events of daily life, through the joys and sufferings that go with it, the people who are close to you, the voice of your conscience thirsting for truth, happiness, goodness and beauty.
If you are able to open your hearts and minds with availability, you will discover "your vocation", in other words, the plan that God in his love has devised for you from eternity.
5. You will be able to build a family founded on marriage, that pact of love between a man and a woman who commit themselves to a communion of stable and faithful life. Through your own witness, you will be able to confirm that even amid all the difficulties and obstacles, it is possible to live Christian marriage to the full as an experience filled with meaning and, as it were, "good news" for all families.
You will be able to be, if this is your vocation, a priest or a religious, giving your life to Christ and to the Church with an undivided heart and thus becoming a sign of God's loving presence in today's world. Like so many who have gone before you, you will be able to be an undaunted and unflagging apostle, watchful in prayer, cheerful and welcoming in community service.
Yes, you too can be one of these! I am well aware that you may feel hesitant when faced with such a proposal; but I say to you: do not be afraid! God does not let himself be outdone in generosity! After almost 60 years of being a priest, I am happy to bear my witness to all of you here: it is beautiful to be able to spend oneself without reserve for the cause of the Kingdom of God!
6. There is yet another invitation, a third one: young people of Switzerland, "Set out on your way!" Do not be content with discussion; do not wait to do good for opportunities that may never come. The time for action is now!
At the beginning of this third millennium, you too, young people, are called to proclaim the message of the Gospel with the testimony of your lives. The Church needs your energies, your enthusiasm, your youthful ideals to ensure that the Gospel permeates the fabric of society and inspires a civilization of authentic justice and love without discrimination. Now more than ever, in a world all too often deprived of light and the courage of noble ideals, it is not the time to be ashamed of the Gospel (cf Rom 1, 16). Rather, it is time to preach it from the rooftops (cf Mt 10, 27).
The Pope, your bishops, the whole Christian community are counting on your commitment, on your generosity, and following you with confidence and hope: young people of Switzerland, start out on your way! The Lord goes with you.
May you have in your hands the Cross of Christ. Let the words of Life be on your lips; and in your hearts, the saving grace of the Risen Lord!

"«Béni soit Dieu le Père, et le Fils unique de Dieu, ainsi que le Saint-Esprit, car il nous a traités avec amour» (Antienne d’ouverture)
1. En ce premier dimanche après la Pentecôte, l’Église nous invite à célébrer le mystère de la Sainte Trinité. Nous le faisons, chers frères et sœurs, dans un décor superbe de sommets enneigés, de vertes vallées riches en fleurs et en fruits, de nombreux lacs et de torrents, qui rendent admirable votre terre. Notre méditation est guidée par la première lecture, qui nous amène à contempler la Sagesse divine «lorsque Dieu affermissait les cieux... chargeait de puissance les nuages dans les hauteurs et maîtrisait les sources de l’abîme; lorsqu’il imposait à la mer ses limites... lorsqu’il établissait les fondements de la terre» (Pr 8, 27-29).
Cependant, notre regard ne doit pas uniquement se tourner vers la création, «œuvre des mains de Dieu» (Psaume responsorial); il se rend spécialement attentif aux personnes qui nous environnent. Je vous salue avec affection, chers Frères et Sœurs de cette merveilleuse région située au cœur de l’Europe. J’aimerais serrer la main à chacun de vous pour le saluer personnellement et lui dire : «Le Seigneur est avec toi et il t’aime !».
Je salue fraternellement les Évêques de Suisse, avec leur Président Monseigneur Amédée Grab, Évêque de Coire, ainsi que Monseigneur Kurt Koch, Évêque de Bâle, que je remercie pour les paroles qu’il m’a adressées en votre nom à tous. J’adresse mes salutations déférentes à Monsieur le Président de la Confédération Helvétique ainsi qu’aux Autorités, qui nous honorent de leur présence.
Enfin, j’adresse un salut particulier et plein d’affection à tous les jeunes catholiques de Suisse, que j’ai rencontrés hier soir au Palais Bern Expo, où nous avons écouté ensemble l’invitation exigeante et enthousiasmante de Jésus : «Levez-vous!». Chers jeunes amis, sachez que le Pape vous aime, qu’il vous accompagne par la prière quotidienne, qu’il compte sur votre collaboration pour l’annonce de l’Évangile et qu’il vous encourage avec confiance à avancer sur le chemin de la vie chrétienne.
2. «Ce que nous croyons de ta gloire, parce que tu l’as révélé», dirons-nous dans la Préface. Notre assemblée eucharistique est le témoignage et la proclamation de la gloire du Très-Haut et de sa présence agissante dans l’histoire. Soutenus par l’Esprit que le Père nous a envoyé par l’intermédiaire de son Fils, «la détresse elle-même fait notre orgueil, puisque la détresse, nous le savons, produit la persévérance; la persévérance produit la valeur éprouvée; la valeur éprouvée produit l’espérance» (Rm 5, 3-4).
Chers Frères, je demande au Seigneur de pouvoir être au milieu de vous un témoin de l’espérance, de l’espérance qui «ne trompe pas», parce qu’elle est fondée sur l’amour de Dieu qui «a été répandu dans nos cœurs par l’Esprit Saint» (Rm 5,5). C’est de cela que le monde a aujourd’hui particulièrement besoin: d’un supplément d’espérance!
3. «Tu es un seul Dieu, tu es un seul Seigneur» (Préface). Les trois Personnes divines, égales et distinctes, sont un seul Dieu. Leur distinction réelle ne divise pas l’unité de la nature divine.
Cette communion profonde, le Christ nous la propose comme modèle, à nous ses disciples : «Que tous, ils soient un, comme toi, Père, tu es en moi, et moi en toi. Qu’ils soient un en nous, eux aussi, pour que le monde croie que tu m’as envoyé». (Jn 17, 21). La célébration du mystère de la Sainte Trinité constitue chaque année pour les chrétiens un pressant appel à l’engagement pour l’unité. C’est un appel qui nous concerne tous, pasteurs et fidèles, qui nous incite à une conscience renouvelée de notre responsabilité dans l’Église, Épouse du Christ. Comment ne pas voir, avec ces paroles du Christ, l’impérieuse préoccupation œcuménique ? J’affirme aussi de nouveau, à cette occasion, notre volonté d’avancer sur le chemin difficile, mais riche de joie, de la pleine communion de tous les croyants.
Toutefois, il est certain qu’une forte contribution à la cause œcuménique viendra de la volonté des catholiques de vivre l’unité entre eux. Dans la Lettre apostolique Novo millennio ineunte, j’ai souligné la nécessité de «faire de l’Église la maison et l’école de la communion» (n. 43), tenant le regard du cœur fixé «sur le mystère de la Trinité qui habite en nous, et dont la lumière doit aussi être perçue sur le visage des frères» (ibid.). C’est ainsi que se nourrit «la spiritualité de la communion», qui, partant des lieux dans lesquels se façonne l’homme et le chrétien, rejoint les paroisses, les associations, les mouvements. Une Église locale dans laquelle fleurira la spiritualité de la communion saura se purifier constamment des «toxines» de l’égoïsme, qui engendrent jalousies, méfiances, replis frileux, oppositions nuisibles.
4. L’évocation de ces risques suscite en nous une prière spontanée à l’Esprit Saint, que Jésus a promis de nous envoyer : «Quand il viendra, lui, l’Esprit de vérité, il vous guidera vers la vérité tout entière» (Jn 16, 13).
Qu’est-ce que la vérité, Jésus a dit un jour: «Je suis le chemin, la vérité et la vie» (Jn 14, 6). La juste formulation de la question n’est donc pas «Qu’est-ce que la vérité ?», mais «Qui est la vérité ?».
Telle est la question que se pose aussi l’homme du troisième millénaire. Chers Frères et Sœurs, nous ne pouvons pas nous taire, parce que nous la connaissons. La vérité est Jésus Christ, venu dans le monde pour nous révéler et nous donner l’amour du Père. Nous sommes appelés à témoigner de cette vérité par la parole mais surtout par notre vie !
5. Chers Amis, l’Église est mission ! Elle a besoin, aujourd’hui encore, de «prophètes» capables de réveiller dans la communauté la foi dans le Verbe, révélateur de Dieu riche en miséricorde (cf. Ep 2,4). Le temps est venu de préparer de jeunes générations d’apôtres qui n’auront pas peur de proclamer l’Évangile. Pour tout baptisé, il est essentiel de passer d’une foi de convenance à une foi mûre, qui s’exprime clairement dans des choix personnels clairs, convaincus et courageux.
Seule une telle foi, célébrée et partagée dans la liturgie et dans la charité fraternelle, peut nourrir et fortifier la communauté des disciples du Seigneur et construire l’Église missionnaire, libérée des fausses peurs parce qu’assurée de l’amour du Père.
6. «L’amour de Dieu a été répandu dans nos cœurs par l’Esprit Saint» (Rm 5, 5). Ce n’est pas un mérite qui nous revient; c’est un don gratuit. Malgré le poids de notre péché, Dieu nous a aimés et nous a rachetés par le sang du Christ. Sa grâce nous a guéris en profondeur.
C’est pourquoi nous pouvons proclamer avec le Psalmiste: «Comme il est grand, Seigneur, ton amour, dans tout l’univers !». Comme il est grand en moi, dans les autres, en tout être humain !
Telle est la véritable source de la grandeur de l’homme, telle est la racine de son indestructible dignité. En tout être humain se reflète l’image de Dieu. C’est ici la plus profonde «vérité» de l’homme qui, en aucun cas, ne peut être niée ou violée. En définitive, tout outrage fait à l’homme constitue un outrage à son Créateur, qui l’aime avec un amour de Père.
La Suisse a en effet une grande tradition de respect pour l’homme. Il s’agit de la tradition qui est placée sous le signe de la Croix: la Croix-Rouge !
Chrétiens de ce noble Pays, soyez toujours à la hauteur de votre glorieux passé ! En tout être humain sachez reconnaître et honorer l’image de Dieu ! En l’homme, créé par Dieu, se reflète la gloire de la Sainte Trinité.
Disons donc: «Gloire au Père, au Fils, au Saint-Esprit: au Dieu qui est, qui était et qui vient» (Acclamation à l’Évangile). Amen !"

"1. At the end of this celebration, I would like to go on a spiritual pilgrimage to the many shrines and churches that also in Switzerland are dedicated to Mary.
I am thinking in particular of the Abbey of Einsiedeln and the Shrines of Our Lady of Sasso, Our Lady of Bourguillon and Our Lady of Vorbourg. From these holy places Mary watches over the valleys and districts of your country, helping believers to preserve and increase those precious possessions: faith, hope and love.
2. Today I renew the entrustment of the Swiss People to the Blessed Virgin. May Mary watch over families, safeguarding conjugal love and supporting the mission of parents. May she comfort the elderly and help them to ensure that society does not lack their precious contribution. May she nourish in young people their sense of values and the commitment to abide by them. May she obtain for the entire national community the constant, unanimous desire to build together a prosperous and peaceful country, which is both attentive and full of solidarity for people in difficulty.
3. I would especially like to entrust to Mary the youth of Switzerland, whom the Pope regards with affection and gratitude. Indeed, the young men of this country have guaranteed to the Successor of Peter and to the Holy See the invaluable and highly regarded service of the Pontifical Swiss Guard. In the generous fidelity of the Swiss Guards everyone can admire the spirit of faith and love for the Church of so many Swiss Catholics.
4. Lastly, may the Blessed Virgin help your nation to preserve harmony and unity among the various linguistic and ethnic groups which comprise it and to show appreciation for the contribution of each one. With these sentiments, let us recite together the prayer of the Angelus, a wonderful compendium of the whole Gospel."

"I say to you once again with great joy: "thank you", Switzerland, and "thank you" to the organizational committee of this youth meeting. A special "thank you" goes to the choir. I thank all of you who have come here from the different Cantons.
Your presence gives me great joy.
