Benedict XVI's reflection on his apostolic journey to Cameroon & Angola

_{"Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today I am pausing to speak of my recent Apostolic Journey to Africa, the first in my Pontificate to that continent. It was limited to Cameroon and Angola, but with my Visit I intended to embrace in spirit all the African peoples and to bless them in the Lord's name. I experienced the traditional warm African welcome which I met with everywhere, and I willingly take this opportunity to express once again my deep gratitude to the Episcopates of the two countries, to the Heads of State, to all the Authorities and to all those who in their various capacities did their utmost to ensure the success of my Pastoral Visit.}

_{My stay in Africa began on 17 March in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, where I immediately found myself in the heart of Africa, and not only geographically. In fact, this country sums up many features of that vast continent and first and foremost its profoundly religious spirit which all the very numerous ethnic groups that populate it have in common. In Cameroon more than a quarter of the inhabitants are Catholic and live peacefully with the other religious communities. For this reason, in 1995 my beloved Predecessor John Paul II chose the capital of this very nation to promulgate the Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in Africa, after the first Synodal Assembly dedicated, precisely, to the African continent. This time, the Pope went there to present the Instrumentum Laboris of the Second Synodal Assembly for Africa, scheduled to be held in Rome next October and whose theme will be: "The Church in Africa in Service to Reconciliation, Justice and Peace: "You are the salt of the earth.... You are the light of the world' (Mt 5: 13-14)".}

_{At the meetings I had with the Episcopates two days apart respectively of Cameroon and of Angola and São Tomé e Príncipe, I wished, especially in this Pauline Year, to recall the urgent need for evangelization which is primarily incumbent on the Bishops themselves and stressed the collegial dimension, based on sacramental communion. I urged them always to be an example to their priests and to all the faithful, and to take an interest in the formation of the seminarians who, thanks be to God, are numerous and of the catechists who are becoming more and more necessary to the life of the Church in Africa. I encouraged the Bishops to promote the pastoral care of marriage and the family, the liturgy and culture, so as to enable lay people to withstand the attack of sects and esoteric groups. My affectionate wish was to strengthen them in the practice of charity and in the defence of the rights of the poor.}

_{Then I am thinking back to the solemn celebration of Vespers in Yaoundé in the Basilica of "Marie Reine des Apôtres", Patronness of Cameroon. It is a large, modern church that stands on the site where the first evangelizers of Cameroon worked, the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. On the eve of the Solemnity of St Joseph to whose attentive custody God entrusted his most precious treasures, Mary and Jesus, we glorified the one Father who is in Heaven, together with the representatives of other Churches and ecclesial Communities. In contemplating the spiritual figure of St Joseph, who dedicated his life to Christ and to the Virgin Mary, I asked the priests, the consecrated people and the members of ecclesial movements to respond ever more faithfully to their calling, living in God's presence and in joyful obedience to his word.}

_{At the Apostolic Nunciature in Yaoundé I had the opportunity also to meet with the representatives of the Muslim community in Cameroon. Reaffirming the importance of interreligious dialogue and collaboration between Christians and Muslims to help the world to open itself to God. It really was a very pleasant meeting.}

_{One of the crowning events of the Journey was without a doubt the promulgation of the Instrumentum Laboris of the Second Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops, on 19 March, the day of St Joseph and my name day in the Stadium of Yaoundé at the end of the solemn Eucharistic Celebration in honour of St Joseph. It took place in a harmonious atmosphere among the People of God, "with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival" according to the Psalm (Ps 42[41]: 4) of which we had a real experience. The Synodal Assembly will be celebrated in Rome, but in a certain sense it has already begun in the heart of the African continent, in the heart of the Christian family that lives, suffers and hopes there. For this reason the fact that the publication of the "Working Document" coincided with the Feast of St Joseph, a model of faith and hope like the first Patriarch, Abraham, seemed to me to be fortuitous. Faith in the "God who is close", who revealed his loving Face in Jesus, is the guarantee of a trustworthy hope for Africa and for the whole world, a guarantee of a future of reconciliation, justice and peace.}

_{After the solemn liturgical assembly and the festive presentation of the Working Document, at the Apostolic Nunciature in Yaoundé, I was able to meet with the Members of the Special Council for Africa of the Synod of Bishops and to live with them a moment of intense communion: we reflected together on Africa's history in a theological and pastoral perspective. It was almost like a first meeting of the Synod itself, in a brotherly discussion between the different episcopates and the Pope concerning the prospects of the Synod of reconciliation and peace in Africa. Christianity, in fact and this was evident has put down deep roots in African soil from the outset, as is attested by the numerous martyrs and saints, pastors, teachers and catechists who flourished, first in the north and later, in subsequent epochs, in the rest of the continent: let us think of Cyprian, of Augustine, of his mother, Monica, and of Athanasius; and then of the Martyrs of Uganda, of Josephine Bakhita and of the many others. In this season, which sees Africa working to consolidate her political independence and the construction of the national identities in a now globalized context, the Church accompanies Africans, recalling the important message of the Second Vatican Council, applied through the first and now, the Second Assembly of the Synod for Africa. In the midst of the unfortunately numerous and tragic conflicts which still afflict various regions of that continent the Church knows she must be a sign and an instrument of unity and reconciliation so that the whole of Africa may build together a future of justice, solidarity and peace, putting into practice the teachings of the Gospel.}

_{A powerful sign of the humanizing action of Christ's message is certainly the Cardinal Léger Centre in Yaoundé, destined for the rehabilitation of disabled people. Its founder was the Canadian Cardinal Paul-Émile Léger, who chose to retire after the Council of 1968, to work among the poor. At that Centre, which he later handed over to the State, I met numerous brothers and sisters in situations of suffering, and shared with them but also drew from them the hope that comes from faith even in situations of suffering.}

_{The second stage and the second part of my Journey was Angola, certain aspects of which make it another emblematic country. In fact, Angola has emerged from a long civil war and is now involved in the work of national reconciliation and reconstruction. But how could this reconciliation and this reconstruction be authentic if they were achieved at the expense of the poorest people who have a right, like everyone, to have a share of the resources of their land? This is why, with this Visit of mine whose first purpose was obviously to strengthen the Church in the faith, I also intended to encourage the social process that is under way. In Angola what my venerable Predecessors repeated more than once is really tangible: all is lost with war, all can be reborn with peace. However, in order to rebuild a nation great moral energy is required. And here, once again, the role of the Church is important; she is called to carry out an educational role, working in depth to renew and form consciences.}

_{St Paul is the Patron of the city of Luanda, the capital of Angola. This is why I chose to celebrate the Eucharist with the priests, seminarians, religious, catechists and other pastoral workers on Saturday 21 March, in the church dedicated to the Apostle. Once again St Paul's personal experience spoke to us of the encounter with the Risen Christ, capable of transforming people and society. Historical contexts change and it is necessary to be mindful of this but Christ remains the true force of radical renewal of man and of the human community. Therefore to return to God, to be converted to Christ means going ahead toward the fullness of life.}

_{In Luanda, to express the Church's closeness to the efforts for the reconstruction of Angola and of so many African regions, I wanted to dedicate two special encounters respectively to youth and to women. With the young people, in the stadium, it was a celebration of joy and hope, unfortunately saddened by the death of two girls who were crushed by the crowd at the entrance. Africa is a very young continent but too many of its sons and daughters, children and adolescents, have already suffered serious wounds that only Jesus Christ, the Risen Crucified One can heal by imbuing in them, with his Spirit, the strength to love and to work for justice and peace. I then paid homage to the women for the service that so many of them offer to faith, to human dignity, to life, to the family. I reaffirmed their full right to be involved in public life, but not to the detriment of their role in the family, a fundamental mission to be carried out in responsible sharing with all the other members of society, especially with the husbands and fathers. So this was the message that I left to the new generations and to the world of women, extending it later to all at the great Eucharistic assembly on Sunday, 22 March, concelebrated with the Bishops of the countries of southern Africa, with the participation of a million of the faithful. If the African peoples I told them like ancient Israel, base their hope on the Word of God, rich in their religious and cultural heritage, they will truly be able to build a future of reconciliation and stable peace for all.}

_{Dear brothers and sisters, how many other considerations I have in my heart and how many memories come to mind as I think of this journey! I ask you to thank the Lord for the marvels he has worked and continues to work in Africa thanks to the generous action of the missionaries, men and women religious, volunteers, priests and catechists, and in young communities full of enthusiasm and faith. I also ask you to pray for the African peoples, very dear to me, so that they may be able to face courageously the great social, financial and spiritual challenges of the present time. We entrust everything and everyone to the maternal intercession of Mary Most Holy, Queen of Africa, and of the African Saints and Blesseds."}

En me désignant comme son Envoyé extraordinaire aux Célébrations de la XIII Journée mondiale du Malade, le Saint-Père Jean-Paul II a voulu être officiellement et publiquement représenté et témoigner ainsi de son union et de sa sollicitude particulière envers les malades et ceux qui les assistent afin de leur apporter la consolation céleste de l'âme.

Je rends grâce au Seigneur, Maître de la Vie, qui me donne l'occasion de célébrer l'Eucharistie dans ce mémorable sanctuaire marial de Mvolyé au coeur du continent africain, 10 ans après la Journée célébrée en 1995, au sanctuaire marial de Marie, Reine de la Paix à Yamoussoukro, en Côte-d'Ivoire. Une fois de plus, le choix de l'Afrique pour la célébration d'un tel événement manifeste non seulement l'attention particulière que l'Eglise catholique prête aux problèmes de ce continent, mais aussi la volonté d'apporter sa contribution matérielle, spirituelle et morale face aux graves défis que connaît le continent africain, en particulier dans le domaine de la santé.

J'adresse un vif remerciement à tous les agents pastoraux de l'Eglise du Cameroun, à toutes les Autorités civiles et politiques, aux Organisateurs de cette Journée et à vous tous qui participez à cette célébration pour l'esprit d'accueil cher aux traditions africaines que vous n'avez cessé de nous manifester dès notre arrivée et surtout pour l'attention que vous portez aux problèmes de santé.

L'événement que nous célébrons aujourd'hui coïncide avec l'institution du Conseil pontifical pour la Pastorale de la Santé, le 11 février 1985, par le Pape Jean-Paul II. Ce Dicastère pontifical a pour objectif celui de donner réponse aux questions ultimes de l'existence humaine, notamment les problèmes de la souffrance, de la maladie et de la mort auxquels l'Eglise répond de manière vive par l'action de l'Esprit-Saint Consolateur qui nous conduit au Christ mort et ressuscité; en ce sens le Conseil pontifical pour la Pastorale des Services de la Santé va "au-devant des blessés de la vie pour leur offrir l'amour du Christ" (Message pour la XIII Journée mondiale du Malade, n. 5) et manifeste "la sollicitude de l'Eglise pour les malades, en apportant son aide à ceux qui assurent le service des malades et à ceux qui souffrent" (Pastor Bonus, n.152). Bref, le Conseil pontifical pour la Pastorale des Services de la Santé est au service de la diffusion de l'Evangile de l'espérance chrétienne, thème du Message du Pape pour cette Journée, auprès du personnel de la santé et des personnes souffrantes. La Journée du Malade a été placée, par volonté du Saint-Père, sous le patronage de Marie, Notre-Dame de Lourdes, dont nous fêtons la mémoire aujourd'hui en l'invoquant comme Consolatrice des affligés et Santé des malades.

Je voudrais en outre attirer votre attention sur le fait que nous célébrons cette Journée dans le cadre de l'année liturgique  que  le  Saint Père a voulu consacrer au Mystère de l'Eucharistie dans lequel Jésus offre son corps et son sang, faisant ainsi don de sa propre vie, gage de salut pour l'humanité. C'est le même Christ qui nous invite à l'imiter:  "Vous ferez cela en mémoire de moi" (Lc 22, 19-20.) C'est en lui que toutes les personnes engagées dans le domaine de la pastorale de la santé puisent la force nécessaire pour travailler dans la foi avec amour, générosité, dévouement et désintéressement, en apportant le réconfort, la paix et l'espérance aux malades et aux personnes qui souffrent. Dans le Mystère de l'Eucharistie, spécialement dans le Viatique, nous trouvons la réponse pratique à tous les problèmes de la santé parce que sur la Croix s'est opéré le salut du monde. En célébrant aujourd'hui cette liturgie eucharistique, moment culminant de la Journée mondiale du Malade, nous rendons présente en Afrique et pour toute l'Afrique, la réalité de la guérison de la maladie avec la toute puissance du Sauveur.

En effet, l'Eglise "reconnaît le visage du Christ dans les traits de toute personne qui souffre" (Message pour la XIII Journée mondiale du Malade, n. 5). Le Christ est identifié à ce personnage décrit dans la première lecture tirée du livre d'Isaïe:  "Il n'avait ni beauté ni éclat pour attirer nos regards, ni apparence telle que nous le recherchions; objet de mépris, abandonné des hommes, homme de douleur, familier de la souffrance, comme quelqu'un devant qui on se voile la face; méprisé, nous n'en faisions aucun cas" (Is 53, 2-3).

Encore aujourd'hui, chers frères et soeurs, notre société compte de nombreux cas de personnes abandonnées, méprisées. Elles ont besoin de notre compassion et de notre solidarité, de notre regard de bonté et de bienveillance; elles ont besoin d'expérimenter l'amour du Christ à leur égard à travers notre présence consolante et l'assistance médicale. Dans la deuxième lecture, saint Paul nous exhorte à assumer la souffrance dans un total abandon et une totale confiance au Père, sûrs de la victoire, de sorte que rien ne puisse nous séparer de l'amour du Christ (Rm 8, 31.35):  "Si Dieu est pour nous, qui sera contre nous?" Ceci implique que personne ne soit laissée seule dans sa solitude et ses besoins.

A ce propos, l'observation du Pape Jean-Paul II, dans l'Exhortation post-synodale Ecclesia in Africa, garde toute sa pertinence:  "L'Afrique est un continent où d'innombrables êtres humains - hommes et femmes, enfants et jeunes - sont étendus en quelque sorte, sur le bord de la route, malades, blessés, impotents, marginalisés et abandonnés. Ils ont un extrême besoin de bons Samaritains qui leur viennent en aide" (Ecclesia in Africa, n. 41). Par sa sollicitude et sa parole efficace, Jésus guérit l'infirme et lui assure la réhabilitation dans la société:  "Lève-toi, prends ton grabat et marche (Jn 5, 8)".

Certes, les agents de santé n'ont pas, à l'exemple de Jésus, le pouvoir de restituer la santé aux malades par la seule force de la parole, toutefois ils possèdent les connaissances et l'art de la guérison qui leur donnent une compétence particulière pour venir à l'encontre des besoins de santé de l'infirme. En ce sens, ils exercent leur profession au sein des institutions médicales pour guérir les infirmités humaines, se mettant ainsi au service de la vie. Nombreux sont les évêques, les prêtres, les religieux (ses) qui assistent les malades dans l'Eglise d'Afrique et certains le font sans même avoir une connaissance médicale spécifique; tous le font avec un coeur plein de charité, d'amour, de compassion et de délicatesse. A l'instar du bon samaritain (cf. Lc 10, 29-37), ils s'arrêtent auprès des personnes souffrantes et blessées pour leur prêter secours. Ce qui compte, c'est de contribuer à former des "personnes debout, des personnes qui marchent", c'est-à-dire des personnes saines de corps et d'esprit, qui jouissent de la vie surabondante qui vient du Christ. Ils aident les malades à se configurer au Christ souffrant, mort et ressuscité, à unir leur souffrance au sacrifice du Christ pour le salut du monde et à faire l'expérience de la consolation spirituelle, fruit de l'espérance chrétienne. Comme l'écrivait le Saint Père, "dans le Christ se trouve l'espérance de la santé véritable et plénière, le salut qu'il apporte est la vraie réponse aux interrogations ultimes de l'homme" (Message pour la XIII Journée mondiale du Malade, n. 6).

A l'exemple du Christ, modèle parfait du don de soi aux autres, les agents de santé - directeurs d'hôpitaux et des centres de santé, médecins, infirmiers et infirmières, sages-femmes, chercheurs, pharmaciens, aumôniers, volontaires, ainsi que le personnel paramédical, sont appelés à servir la vie, à la promouvoir et à la défendre. Par leur engagement, ils sont les témoins de l'amour et de la présence du Christ ainsi que les artisans de la culture de la vie auprès des familles éprouvées par la  maladie  et  les souffrances de tout genre:  enfants mal nourris, abandonnés, orphelins, hommes et femmes privés de certains membres de leurs familles à cause des conflits armés, personnes âgées privées du soutien familial, toxicomanes, malades atteints de SIDA, de la malaria et de la tuberculose.

Au nom du Saint-Père Jean-Paul II, Je voudrais lancer un appel vibrant à tous les dirigeants du monde, afin que cesse le bruit des armes qui sont à l'origine des grandes souffrances et des maladies pour les populations d'Afrique. Travaillons donc ensemble pour construire la paix et faciliter le développement social, politique et économique dont l'Afrique à urgemment besoin.

En ce qui concerne le SIDA, je voudrais à cette occasion rappeler ce que le Pape recommande aux agents pastoraux:  "Apporter aux frères et soeurs atteints du SIDA tout le réconfort possible, du point de vue matériel, comme du point de vue moral et spirituel. Aux hommes de science et aux responsables politiques, je demande instamment que, animés par l'amour et le respect dus à toute personne humaine, ils ne lésinent pas sur les moyens susceptibles d'arrêter ce fléau" (Exhort. apost. Ecclesia in Africa, n. 116).

Pour donner une contribution concrète en faveur des malades du SIDA et des populations exposées à cette pandémie ainsi qu'à d'autres pathologies émergentes, le Pape Jean-Paul II vient de créer une Fondation dénommée "Le Bon Samaritain" qui cherchera à répondre aux nombreux besoins que les communautés chrétiennes rencontrent dans ce domaine. Je vous exhorte a donner votre contribution, en tant qu'Eglise d'Afrique, à cette Fondation. L'Afrique sera la principale bénéficiaire de cette Institution; dans l'Eglise, comme vous le savez, on donne et on reçoit dans un esprit de communion fraternelle. C'est dans ce sens que nous attendons votre précieuse aide afin de faire croître la Fondation "le Bon Samaritain" et ainsi venir au secours des malades les plus nécessiteux dans le monde.

Pour finir, je voudrais saluer avec admiration le courage et le dévouement de plusieurs d'entre vous qui, avec un esprit d'abnégation et de sacrifice, travaillent dans des conditions très difficiles, souvent dans des structures inadéquates avec les moyens du bord pour assister leurs frères et soeurs malades. Je m'adresse spécialement aux religieuses et religieux qui travaillent avec héroïsme parmi les personnes les plus nécessiteuses. Je salue aussi avec déférence  et  remercie  les différents responsables des Institutions tant civiles que religieuses, notamment les gouvernants et les Conférences épiscopales, pour les progrès réalisés dans le domaine de la santé et je les encourage à collaborer et à s'impliquer toujours davantage dans la formation d'un personnel qualifié, dans l'éducation au respect de la valeur sacrée de la vie, dans la mise sur pied des structures adéquates, dans l'équipement matériel des centres de santé, dans l'organisation de la prévention. Dans cette ligne de la prévention, et en particulier face au SIDA, je voudrais rappeler avec force l'efficacité absolue de la vertu de la chasteté et partant de la fidélité conjugale et de l'abstinence avant le mariage. En plus, je vous invite a vous engager dans la sécurité alimentaire et dans la promotion de l'assurance médicale afin de combattre de façon responsable la diffusion des maladies et permettre ainsi à tous d'accéder aux soins de santé primaires.

Puisse la Vierge Marie de Lourdes, Cause de notre joie et Reine de la Paix, intercéder en faveur des peuples d'Afrique, et en particulier de nombreux malades, infirmes et souffrants ainsi que du personnel soignant, afin qu'ils puissent trouver en Jésus Christ, Espérance pour l'Afrique, la consolation de l'âme et la force du service envers ceux qui souffrent. Amen."</sub>
